these session ipas like founders all day ipa doesn't come with sessionable price tag. for 13.99 I'd rather pick something like fresh flower power and it'll give me a better buzz

I have no idea if you are quoting a 6 pack or 12 pack price. In MN, that would be obscenely expensive for a six, but a steal for twelve. I paid $9.49 for six. But I don't think about abv when buying beer. I don't care about having a buzz, but taste. Which is part of the reason I like these beers, as I like having the taste w/o the buzz.

right you make absolute sense but that's the price of a SIX pack around me. that my friend doesn't make sense at all. trust me I don't drink beer to get buzzed but for that price I better be feeling something.

What's the historical basis for Black IPA?

Session IPA is the craft version of light beer or "lite" beer.

plenty of people drink to have something flavorful and pleasant to go along with food and the company of friends. just a hint of relaxing effect is enough and they don't need to get to the point of being "buzzed" - which let's be honest, just means "mildly intoxicated" (or quite often - "more than mildly intoxicated"...).

Well the comparison does fall apart when considering flavor. Session IPA's taste good, light beer doesn't.

Ok, I guess I can agree then. I just don't drink Session IPAs for their low calories, cheap price or "drinkability", and that is why I think many drink Light Lagers.

I said in my post that I really don't care what they call it, and I don't. But to me All Day is a Pale Ale, and Zombie Dust is an IPA. The breweries may say otherwise, but my pallet tells me what I just said.

Caldera right at 6.1 ABV and it's in cans, I don't suppose the course likes glass.

It's based on actual brewery and contemporary records and as a consequence dispels a lot of beer myths.

I'm on board with the op. I'm sick of everything being a bastardized ipa. American styles are known for being excessively hoppy, but being over hopped doesn't. Make something an ipa. Is surly bender a brown ipa? Hell no. It's an american brown ale. An exceptionally hoppy session beer isn't an ipa. Original gravity a;d terminal gravity are both too low to fit into ipa style guidelines. I think it's lazy to call these beers a session ipa, but I guess that is the american way. Lazy bastards.

Whose style guidelines and who writes them anyway?
IPA has been around for a very long time indeed and has existed in many forms during that time. One point worth repeating is that they were never strong beers, generally weaker than their domestic equivalents.Had it not been for tax reasons they would have been even weaker.
    From 1867:
"for beer made from wort of the specific gravity 1042 is not only better calculated to resist secondary fermentation and the other effects of a hot climate, but is also more pleasant and salubrious to the consumer."

That, bearing in mind the extreme attenuation of IPA , would mean that 4.5% ABV would be ideal for an IPA.
