With the intro of Founders to TX recently I had tried the All Day IPA in bottle a few times. Recently had it on tap and enjoyed even more. With a little homebrewing background I appreciate the skill to make a nice flavorful low ABV beer almost more than a higher ABV offering.

That said, what are some opinions on lower ABV IPA/Pale Ales? I really like the Founders All Day, and enjoy the Victory Headwaters also. Stone Levitation is alright, as is Firestone Pale 31, and the original SN Pale Ale. What is anybody else's thoughts on these offerings?

Any other recommendations for a nice flavorful hoppy ale that's kind of sessionable? Here in the ATX in July you gotta stay hydrated!

Calma Muerta @ Pinthouse Pizza definitely falls into this category. Pick yourself up a growler of it and enjoy.

I been meaning to get up there. Some friends told me Pinthouse is solid brews but also like romper room in there with all the kids!

Sessionable beers are a must in the TX summer. I love the All Day, as well. My absolute favorite beer right now is Hops and Grain's The One They Call Zoe. Its a lager, but it has a strong enough hop profile to appeal to IPA drinkers.

Goose Island Honkers Ale is only 4.3%. I think it's around and available, although I don't remember seeing it too often. Years ago, I loved this stuff but have no idea how it tastes now.

Calma Muerta and Zoe are both great beers. Look for Austin Beer Works Half IPA when it is released. I think it is going to be the next Heavy Machinery, and it is a winner.

I'd try some of the Pillsners available. Hans Pils is plenty hoppy for me.

I couldnt of said it any better. I tried Zoe last night and i cant believe how much i liked it.
It almost has a IPA kind of taste to it but without the bitterness of being excessively hopped. Its now my new summer beer. I'll be going to HEB and stocking up on it this weekend.
If i was given this without knowing what it was, there is no way i would of ever guessed it is a lager.

Later this month, Austin Beerworks should be debuting their second canned release of Heavy Machinery called Half IPA. It's going to be a sessionable IPA with around 4% ABV. I'm sure it will also be delicious knowing their track record. Sounds right up your alley.

If you go the Pils route, the Deep Ellum rye pils isn't so bad. And I think its 4.3%

We'll be canning up the Half IPA towards the end of this week, so it'll probably hit stores the week after. It's 5.5%ABV, so I'd hesitate to call it a session IPA. It's more of an American Pale Ale with the dry hop schedule of a DIPA (citra and amarillo).

5.5% May be considered sessionable to some. Usually I think of <5% as a session beer! Is it going to be exclusively distributed in Austin or will it make its way down to Houston? Sounds pretty tasty.:grinning:

considering just about everything i drink is 8-11% I would consider 5.5 sessionable.
And i second what he asked. Will it make it's way to Houston?

Right now ABW does not distribute to Houston on any kind of regular basis. Check in on Cottonwood every once in a while though...

Yeah good call, Cottonwood is the only place I've seen it outside of a trip to Austin.

The Heavy Machinery cans say specifically "Only Available in Austin"

That said, the DIPA made on on tap at Cottonwood. I'd expect to see the rest there as well.

Then I need to hit up my Austin contacts then. Yeah, I had this the day Cottonwood tapped it.
