An interesting concept when you consider the amount of water that it takes to make beer. Not sure how I feel about it though.

All the water in the world has passed trough the digestive tract of some creature at some point or another, multiple times. (Although I don't know if making a brown ale, as shown being poured in the video, would put the consumers mind at ease).

Well, that's an amusing way to word that question.

Get used to the idea. This doesn't apply only to beer. More and more communities are using advanced filtration systems to turn wastewater back into drinking water and send it back to consumers through their taps. It's just another way to close the loop as clean drinking water becomes more limited and more expensive.

This would definitely test their marketers.

When I saw this my first thought was that it might be a new Dogfish beer brewed with real, authentic Delaware sewage.

I realize the inevitability and I like to be informed as I believe Americans health has been put at risk because of the FDAs interest in business over citizens...but I truly would rather not know when this happens.

We are probably already drinking wastewater. The City of Minneapolis gets its water from the Mississippi and there are a few dozen wastewater treatment plants upstream that discharge to the Mississippi. The Minneapolis Water Treatment works brings the water up to drinking water standards that are better than what is found in many of the fancy imported bottled waters that people serve in fancy restaurants. Minneapolis water is also better than many rural and suburban supplies that get their water from wells. I suspect that several local breweries are using Minneapolis City water although some of the larger ones may have wells. Many of the cities located around the Great Lakes get their water from the lakes. Probably a quarter of the US population discharges their sewage to the Great Lakes.

I have worked on a waste water treatment plant that discharges water safe enough to drink. I actually had a glass of it. So making beer out of "sewage" is more of a publicity stunt than anything.

They've been using sewage water for years, it just hasn't been treated.

Interesting. I do water/wastewater for a living. Almost zero details in the article and accompanying video. Certainly not uncommon for a drinking water plant to pull water from a river that is receiving treated wastewater from an upstream facility. No clear indication that the water for the brew comes directly out of the good end of the sewage treatment facility. No discussion about if and how the wastewater was treated between the end of the sewage treatment plant and use in the beer. All of it is very feasible, but I would be surprised if it is cost effective (unless the local water rates are very high).

I thought BMC did this already! Turning urine into "beer that looks like urine and tastes not much better." At leAst that's my opinion.

It's definitely a great way to raise awareness about water issues. Even in a place like Portland that's notorious for getting tons of rain it's important to think about conservation and recycling, especially coming out of a winter with almost record low snow pack on Mt Hood.
