Box in a box, anybody ever shipped with a case from a brewery? Was thinking with bubble wrap beneath the bottle and newspaper or bubble wrap around and atop the bottle to stop movement, it might be pretty easy and secure.

Would 12 bombers be risky? Would it be safer staggering and only putting 6 in the case? Would it be better to just take out the dividers and use more bubble wrap/newspaper?

Any real experience with this? I need to send about 8 bombers and can extras once weather improves in return for a 12 bottle shipper. I packed my return items in the box he sent nearly identically to how he packaged, but it's so sloshy I don't want to send it in this condition.

Wild speculation and shit talking encouraged!

I have done it one time, sending a package from MA to VA, about a two day journey. I wrapped each of the bottles really well and did pad the bottoms when I could. The key to this, in my opinion, is then putting this box into another box. Any space left between the inside and outside box was then stuffed with packing materials. If I remember correctly, this shipment had 750s, 500 ml, and 12 oz bottles. By the time I was done I felt the box was really well packed, no movement at all. Box got there just fine.

    Was it a full case, @dphalpin ?

Fun fact, the contents of the 12 shipper are my avitar. Nicest dude!

Yes, if I remember correctly. I was really paranoid when I did it because it was a package for a friend who visited, made some trades, and bought stuff at Hill Farmstead. He couldn't fit everything into his luggage and all of my boxes were out on trades. If you are in any doubt, just pack it as well as you can. All of the bottles were wrapped in packing paper and some of the smaller ones were wrapped in bubble wrap.

I am specifically interested in this because, well, apart from this return box case limits at Hill Farmstead would be nice to ship to myself... same for an upcoming CA trip where I'm hoping to get some good 750s.

IMHO the biggest problem is that the cardboard on most beer/brewery boxes is too thin. I think using either double-walled or very thick single-walled boxes is critical to reliably shipping successfully.

I got a shipment from an online store that had bombers in a case like you describe. They were rattling around a bit but it was in another box and with packing peanuts. Everything was fine.

I have used wine and beer bomber cases with thin dividers. I use a good amount of bubble wrap around the bottle. I have never shipped 12 because it wouldn't fit with the amount of bubble wrapped around each bottle. I then pack it really well inside a little bigger box. It has worked very well in the past. Double boxing is key.

Ok logic was indicating some of this above, but I wanted some experience to back or dispute. Thanks! Any other opinions welcome!

I just asked this in another thread. I'm thinking about using a case (24 bottles) to ship. basically I would make sure none of the bottles can hit each other (separate them with cardboard or some bubble wrap), pad the bottom and the top, and then put the entire case into a bigger box. then I would use padding around the original case to make sure there is protection against being dropped and it's not and not sliding around in there.

I think it should work fine?

My guess would be that this will work 99% of the time easy-peasy.

That being said I would not want to be the 1% that ships something this way, have something break and for some reason lose the whole shipment. Just not worth the risk/reward for me.

Now cans are a whole different critter.

That is basically what I did with a 12 bottle 750ml case. Really pad each bottle well and put plenty of packing materials between the boxes. By the time I was done the outer box was bulging a little bit I had put so much padding between the boxes. I padded both sides as well as the top and the bottoms. Honestly, I felt like the packing was bombproof by the time all was said and done.

I just used this exact method for a case of Zombie Dust I shipped to the West Coast. Opened the case and used newspaper and bubble wrap between the bottels, resealed the box and put it into another bubble wrapped lined box. Worked well. No issues at all.

Done it many times. Definitely bubble wrap each bottle and probably go box within a box (trash bagging the whole interior box is a nice advantage of this). If possible, use a champagne box instead of a bomber box (generally taller to fit bubble-wrapped bottles which gain height and are more sturdy but still has dividers). I usually cushion beneath the bottles with newspaper, etc. in addition to bubble wrap and make sure the tops of bottles are separately bubble wrapped to protect the fragile necks/tops.
