This incident happened to me a couple of months ago, and I want to get a few opinions on the matter. I went into a small local liquor store not long ago looking for a product which ended up being out of stock. I couldn't find anything else that suited my fancy so I left. I do this occasionally. If I don't find something I want, I'm not going to spend my money. As I was getting into my car, the owner approached me and told me I was no longer welcome in his store because I came in too often just to look and didn't buy things. Has this happened to anyone before? Is it appropriate to "shop" and not buy anything at a liquor or beer shop?

That hasn't happened to me - but I do find that everytime I leave a beer store without anything I tend to be scrutinized by the workers. It is kind of annoying and makes me feel awkward, but at the end of the day if you don't have what I want I am not going to buy something else.

That seems ridiculous to me that the guy won't allow you back in though. I would have probably been pretty pissed if he said that to me.

I did this once and felt guilty about not buying anything. An employee by the entrance asked if I found what I was looking for and seemed disappointed. I always try to buy at least a cheap bomber or something when I go into a bottle shop.

That being said, unless you've done this over and over again this guy seems like a jerk.

that is rediculous. i do this all the time. i have been asked "was there something in particular you were looking for"? but to be not welcomed back for not buying something?.... i wouldn't want to go back.

I had spent plenty of money in his store previously. They went several weeks without restocking their shelves of most of their craft offerings. During our "discussion" as he asked me not to come back, he never once asked what I was looking for or how he could help.

Poor customer service. Unacceptable on his part for not actually asking what it was what you were looking for or actually having a good discussion about his store. He couldve used the help it seems.

    Cheers!

I do this frequently, especially if I have spent too much already that month. It is hard to not buy, but I like to just look to see what is new or notice something I haven't before. Sometimes I just like going for a look and to talk to people.

I do it all the time. I've discovered that the smaller the store, the more likely they'll say something to me if I leave without buying. There's one store in particular where I tend to do this a lot. It's a really nice store, but their craft selection is very limited. I like to drop in every couple weeks to see if they've gotten anything interesting. The owner almost always says something to me when I leave if I haven't bought anything -- usually "Couldn't find anything you liked?" or something to that effect. Annoys me a little bit, especially since there's a hint of annoyance/suspicion in his tone.

I'd bet I go in to "just browse" a number of area liquor stores without buying anything the majority of times.

I've had one guy take a shitty tone with me for doing this. Haven't been back since.

I do a LOT of just looking. I always want to know what's available even if I'm not shopping at that moment. That owner's a d-bag.

EDIT: I usually thank whoever's working as I'm leaving, just as a sort of courtesy, because I feel uncomfortable about just looking.

I sometimes avoid the small stores because I may not find anything I want to buy and feel self conscience walking out without buying. I've never had an owner or employee say anything to me but I just feel funny browsing without buying in a small store.

See, I did this at another local store recently and they asked what I was looking for (Bigfoot) and they ordered me a case and it was there the next week.

Fuck that guy. Take your business elsewhere.

I'm not going to spend money on something I don't want to save face. All the bottles shops I frequent are all cool about this. I do this semi-frequently.

I have almost zero self-control when it comes to buying beer, so I almost never leave a bottle shop or liquor store empty-handed.

That said, the shop owner's audacity and apparent feeling of entitlement are astounding...and sounds like he drives off more customers than he attracts. WRT beer, we vote with our wallets...nothing says we must purchase something when we visit a store. If what the OP said is true and there's no "other side of the story" then the shop owner doesn't understand fundamental economics...and is a tool.

Add me to the people who actually do this the bulk of the time. My favorite local shop is right next to our grocery store, so I pop in once a week after getting groceries. I maybe buy something new once a month and feel no guilt about it. His loss and I would not think twice about going back.

OP should 100% post name of place here. I am not saying that I don't believe him, but I don't believe him.

I do this as well and it will take some time to get used to but you can do it. Now all you need to do is get into sours and find a place that has a constant supply of 3F, Hanssens or Tilquin. That way you never leave empty handed.
