Supposedly the Austrian trains are not on strike but the S-bahn is. I'd just need to get to the train station from the airport, but that should be doable.

If you can, it would be smart to check and see who's operating the train you're taking. We thought we were ok too as it was an Austrian train we were on, but there were no trains at all at the Hauptbahnhof, regardless of destination and operator.

Definitely have a plan B and be prepared to hire a car if you need to get to Austria that day.

The trains I've always taken to Salzburg have been "Railjet" but they seemed to have been operated by the DB.

I overestimated my desire for sightseeing and beer drinking after a long transatlantic flight and uncertainty about the travel, so I ended up going directly to my destination. It went without any problems and I didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes for any of the train connections.

I'll keep all of your recommendations in mind for my next trip. Thanks!

Looks like the rail strike was yesterday, so your timing was perfect.

There have been a few Rail strikes, so check before you plan to travel. There are frequent equipment and track outages too.

The German rail system isn't what it used to be.

Yeah, sorry, who would've thought that a beer at 11am local time with 6 hours difference and a red eye flight is not a good idea. But next time for sure.

If you get back to the Munich airport, definitely check out Airbrau.
Good beer brewed on site., and reasonably priced, especially for an airport.

I've done a few trips where I'd arrive Munich in the morn from Boston, meet friends around 11A-12N at Schneiders Weisses Brauhaus for a couple, then go to the Oktoberfest. Draggin' ass big-time at the end of the day.... YIKES!!

    Prost!!

I considered it a great idea too hence this thread, but opted out not stopping in rainy cold Munich with uncertainty of travel for sunny Austria, no need to catch another train, and a beer with a friend.

Paulaner am Nockherberg is just south from the Ostbahnhof. 2km walking, but trams and buses are available. But the S1 from the airport stops at Marienplatz which is a short walk and quick ride to the Hbf.
