Certain bars in Norcal that have SN Celebration on year after year will correctly pour you a "Cele" on order during the holiday season.

As well as a traditional goat for their bock beer - luckily, they appear to have gotten along quite well --- or was that just the alcohol?.

And they also employed elves (another brewing industry tradition, of course). Or were they gnomes?

In Pittsburgh, Iron City was always an Iron. The popular shot and a beer combo was "Imp and Iron." A shot of Imperial whiskey and an Iron City.

Do acronyms count? Cue another acronym thread/forum.

I've been known to say 'Rona for a Corona. Its the least aggressive form of laziness.

Love their logo (t-shirt gift from the in-laws travels a couple years back), sounds like I need to try the brew too next time I hit WY!

In my native NYS, Genesee is Jenny, High Life is Miller's, Utica Club is UC, and Labatts Blue is Blue. Out here Olympia (merely another Pabst product now) is Oly.

Could be wrong here, but I remember extra light beer by peter hand in the '70s, then came lite from miller.

If Miller owned them, and turned extra light into lite, then I'll go with that. Again I could be wrong about this.

No, it was Meister Brau Lite which came first - around 1967 (based, supposedly, on the recipe developed by Joe Owades for Rheingold's Gablinger's Beer - but that's another story).

When MB went out of business in 1972, Miller bought the brand names and Fred Huber (of Huber Brewing Co. in Monroe, WI) and other investors bought the brewery itself and went back to it's previous name of Peter Hand Brewing Co., releasing beers under a few different brands, including "Peter Hand" but with the flagship brand being "Old Chicago" .

In the Cincy area during college, a “Hudy” would get you a Hudepohl.

At The University of Akron during the mid to late ‘80s, we drank a ton of Wiedy’s (Wiedemann’s). $1.81 a sixer. And there were a bunch of times I paid with exactly $1.81, all in change. “Wiedy’s, breakfast of champions.”

Was just reading some old Genesee material and apparently at some point the brewery tried to stress in promo material, etc., that the ale's 'nickname' was spelled "Genny" while the beer was "Jenny".
(Needless to say, this, too, was "Jenny").

Of course, "Genny/Jenny" doesn't mean much if you're verbally ordering a beer at the bar...

I remember when I was first driving out to the west coast (some 40+ years ago :astonished:) being pretty confused by the neon signs in bars and stores after we hit the Rockies that just read "OLY". I knew of "Olympia Beer" of course (tho', probably never had it yet, in the early '70s) but for some reason just didn't connect the two terms..
Well, Pabst merged with Olympia in 1982-83 (which owned Hamm's, as well, by then) during the infamous 3-way merger and spin-off with Heileman, so Oly's been a Pabst brand much longer than the majority of the rest of their portfolio made up mostly of the ex-Stroh/Heileman brands, along with a very few others left from the S&P breweries (which bought Pabst a couple of years after the above 3-way deal) like Ballantine and Pearl.

After the Pabst-Olympia merger, the company's brands looked like this in the mid-80s:

Way back when I think the word "beer" would get you a Lone Star at the American Legion "clubhouse" in El Campo, TX. It was either a Lone Star, a Texas Pride or a Pearl ... whichever the barkeep felt like getting rid of at the time. I do know most of the orders I remember hearing involved just one word ("beer") and the bartender knew what that meant.

I'd imagine the word "bitter" would get you a pint of something in most English pubs, but I can't vouch for it. The craft beer explosion has hit England hard, and the pubs I visited last spring all had multiple beers that arguably could fit the description "bitter."

In a little twist on this thread, how many of you ever called your bartender Mabel, as in "Hey, Mabel, Black Label" when ordering? If so, you're an old fart like me.

People did that? Wow, no wonder Carling in the US died. Bartenders refused to carry it.

I drank beer in areas near some of the old Carling breweries (central MI, eastern MA, MD) but doubt think l ever ordering a Carling Black Label, since there was always something local more interesting to drink (like Geyer Bros., National Premium, Croft or Pickwick ales, etc.)

    (Sorry, @Chaz :slight_frown: )
