Correct, at least when I was there decades ago. The pubs I went to then tended to be "tied houses" so there was no confusion, really. You ordered, "bitter", "mild", "lager"...

I would think that could be a bad idea.:grimacing:

I remember in my youth seeing a lot of tough bartenders at the Corner Bars.

    Cheers!

Ron-yay (phonetic) is short for Rainier beer here in the PNW. Will also accept Vitamin R.

Ten years ago, if you asked for an IPA in Sonoma County you'd definitely get a Lagunitas IPA. Not the case anymore.

Leinie or Linnie seems to be getting more widely known.

We regularly visit a few restraunts where they bring me a beer when they come to greet everyone. It happens when you visit often and tip well.

You order a "blue" in Western New York you get a Labatt Blue. Years ago when we would cross the border to Canada and purchase beer at the Brewers Retail the locals would ask for a pilsner and they would get a six of Labatt Blue.

I'd be willing to bet that uttering "brown" in central VA would net you a Legend Brown Ale. "Lager" would get you a Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. Both have dominant tap coverage.

“Dort” in Cleveland will unmistakably mean GLBC Dortmunder Gold. Even to beerheads and average civilians alike.

At one point (probably still in certain places) ask for a Sammy and get a Sam Adams Boston Lager.

Grew up in Baltimore, and fondly recall the previously mentioned Natty Boh. I also remember local bars that served Hiney's .. aka Heineken.

Antwerpen (Belgium): “Bolleke” will get you De Koninck APA refereeing to the glass shape, practice is common to the point I have never heard anyone ever order a De Koninck.
“Tripel” is still largely understood to be Westmalle Tripel
Flanders (Belgium) – “Pintje” will get you whatever pale lager is on tap.

Back in the mid 1980’s when I was in the UK I always asked for a “bitter” and was given a pint of really good cask beer. No idea what that beer was and it was different at each spot I was at but I never had any pushback about what I was asking for but for one spot that gave me shit for the way I pronounced bitter. I was told to say Bit-ta. I still got a good beer.

    Enjoy
