So I was on my way to Port Aransas on Friday and I stopped into Specs 1604 in San Antonio. I looked around and didn't see much, I did find and unmarked box of Boxers Revenge. So I bought a bottle of Boxers, and one of the guys asked me if I was looking for something particular. I asked him if they had and Black Butte XXIV, and he said "no, that's actually not coming to Texas this year, they said they weren't gonna send it to the state". Bummer I though, since I had bought a bottle at the Whip In last week. So I just let it go since no matter what, it wasn't gonna produce a bottle. Should I have told him that it is being sold, so he doesn't pass out bad info to others?

in this situation... why not correct him?
all you would have had to say is "its in tx, i bought a bottle last week"

Some people would probably resent the correction. Personally, if I said something like that to a customer and they had better information than me I'd want them to say so.

I got the same answer yesterday at Spec's De Zavala, a day after I bought 4 bottles of BBXXIV in Austin. After telling the beer rep this, he said that San Antonio had been blacklisted by Deschutes for reasons that I was already aware of. None of what he said was news to me, but it seemed odd that he said that the beer wasn't sold in TX at all if he was already aware of why San Antonio specifically wasn't getting it.

Personally, I have no problem with customers correcting me so long as they're polite about it. In fact, it was a customer who showed me where to find the bottling date on Lagunitas bottles. I get paid to know about beer, but I'll freely admit that I don't know everything. No one does.

You don't have to answer if you don't want to but why was SA blacklisted? Just curious.

Does this mean SA won't be getting Abyss this year as well?? If so, I may have to move to a different city.

Long story short, Deschutes switched distributors over the past year and got an inaccurate sales report from the old distributor. As a result, we're not getting BBXXIV. Abyss may be in jeopardy as well since it's the same SKU. I'd recommend (tactfully) emailing Deschutes directly to voice discontent over this issue. Just keep in mind that it's not necessarily their fault that they got the wrong sales numbers.

Thanks for the response pwsoldier! I'll email them expressing how much I enjoy what they brew.

I'd say there's nothing wrong correcting someone if done tactfully. People who aren't well adjusted tend to take offense to corrections immediately though so you might end up inadvertantly pissing someone off.

dont correct. Let the little people feel important. If your more knowledgeable, hold it close to the vest. NO reason to flex your muscles. Be comfortable knowing what you know.

I would have no problem being corrected about something as long as it was done respectfully. I dont know everything about my job so if someone wants to correct me and share their knowledge I am all for it.

But more importantly who is going to bring some BBXXIV to SA for me?

...so if I want another bottle of Black Butte I'm going to have to go up to Austin?! What stores still have it?
Good conversation. I like hearing other people's opinions.

I used to work in a beer department and I would welcome being corrected. Credibility is important to me especially if I'm in a position to recommend things.

Sounds like he is just repeating what his distributor said, and from what has been said the distributor seems to have an axe to grind.

I'll edit and say if it is someone in the certain department feel free, but if it a cashier or someone you wouldn't expect to know about beer I'd just let it go.

Share the information respectfully. I've pointed out outdated bottles of hoppy beers to workers before. One recently told me that the 6's of Dale's PA (dated Nov11) was just delivered last week. Either the distributed is pathetic or the beer guy was FOS.

Stuff like that happens sometimes (though not usually with Oskar Blues). I've seen 6+ month old cases of IPA/DIPAs show up at my store. I do my best to check dates as soon as the product comes off the truck so I can send it back if it's not fresh.

I bought mine at Spec's Brodie (two left on the shelf after I bought mine, not sure about backstock) and CM Westgate (pulled it from the back, so I have no idea how much they have). This was on Thursday.

I was once told a store was in negotiations with Cantillon and Russian River for the exclusive right to carry their beer in Texas. I know of other people told this by the same beer guy. Having wrong info/ being ignorant is one thing, lying is another.

I think you should correct just for the reason you stated - because he's going to tell the wrong information to the next guy who asks, and everyone after that. I've had beer guys tell me "I dont think we're getting that" and I've had to tell them "well, I saw it at _______ so its definitely coming to the state." Mostly, they're happy to have the right information - if not, screw em.

black butte is still aroundin austin at several places. I tried one last night for the first time and it was really good. Needs some age definitely and it should age very well. Quite hot right now but the base flavors were very nice
