So I was at a buddy’s place today helping him brew a porter. My buddy is pretty new to brewing, but he’s aggressive when he takes on a new hobby to read, in addition pretty creative. Anyways, he’s made his own chiller, a tripod sock for making it easy to remove hops and plans to add a basic heat shield for the ball valve. So I was wondering what every ones creative home brewing fixes or process improvements. Pictures are appreciated!

Yup, that is exactly what I called the tripod my friend made.

I built a Son of a fermentation chiller last summer and it works great, It has two chambers for ice, enough space for two primary fermenters and a thermostat. it can maintain 10F below ambient which gives me a little wider brewing window and improves the consistency of my beer

Thanks, getting tired of cleaning multiple hop bags for multiple hop additions

I'd assume you need to remove the spider-jobbie to get a wort chiller into the boil for the last 10 min?

Yeah. Can be a bit challenging solo if you have a ton of hops in there!

The other feedback I got from my friend was that it gets in the way of stirring, but still overall easier using it than not.

Does inserting a length of coiled copper wire inside a SS braid to prevent it from collapsing count as home brewing ingenuity?

Not if you use a plate chiller...

I made something very similar. Took the same sized PVC coupler, and a double coat hook. Screwed it to the side of the coupler, and hang it off the side of the kettle with the paint strainer bag attached with a big honkin hose clamp. Total cost was less than $5.

One of my better ideas was to hook up a grill starter to my burner. I can usually get the flame started on one click and I don't have to go searching around the house for a long necked lighter.

I've used a hop spider since batch #3 and it's a godsend. I decided one time only to brew a batch (IIPA) and was amazed at how much volume those hop pellets take at the bottom of the brewkettle (my volume to fermenter suffered quite a bit.) Never again without one.

This is not my idea, but I find it works well. I never did buy a racking cane:
"back before i knew what the hell i was doing, I stuck a skewer like the kind for making kabobs up the end of the curly tubing to keep it straight and the little handle at the end of the skewer keeps it spaced away from the trub."

This is it while it was under construction, two layers of 1 1/4" styrofoam, cut to fit, an analog thermostat, connected to a PC case fan. I used a variable voltage DC converter (variable in steps, not a rheostat) to change fan speed. It's incomplete in the picture, the bottom chamber has dividers so air moves back and forth over plastic tubs I can change out frozen 1G ice jugs, the door and sides are also insulated.

edit, image isnt working, it's here http://i.imgur.com/4en3L69.jpg
