I feel like everyone is missing the point that @Sabtos is trying to make.

Is there a good reason to have bottled this at $60/bottle for on-site? Couldn't they have had this on keg and sold it by the 5oz? Probably would have made more money, and seems silly to force such a huge bottle on someone?

Someone said "not on site only." I get that. I know it's a member bottle. I don't know if there is an inherent cost with putrying some into a keg vs bottling, but it does seem a little silly to always only do bottles.

If you are planning to put out so many bottles a day every so often, THAT makes sense, but if this was really the only day to put it on, I'm not sure that I get it. Either way, it seems like the best idea would probably a mix of both. Legs for the first weekend, then bottles thereafter?

Also, I think @Sabtos point (and perhaps this hits on @Quilentro s impression of the scene) is that there is never any criticism in this thread. Every other brewery seems to have that, but it seems like SP never does. Strikes me as odd.

Thanks for that, better worded than I. Also...other breweries that have memberships often charge less to the members than they end up charging the public for any potentially leftover bottles, for whatever that's worth.

a keg definitely makes more sense but I'm guessing the bottles they didn't rip through this weekend and that aren't going to Fight Club members are getting aged for certain / special events and that seems to be what they're about. bottle conditioning, aging, cellaring and popping up down the road.

Could just be the memberships I'm in, but I've found that those that guarantee bottles don't usually really offer a discount on them - at least Transient, De Garde, Funk Factory and Perennial don't. Perennial has a taproom discount but all the to-go / allocated beers are the same price member or not.

I can't imagine there's anyone that was offered the SP membership and balked that there was no discount.

The SP membership is also basically free compared to almost every single other brewery membership.

That’s what it’s all about, right? $50 for a vial. Made a killing.

I would love to rewind this thread 10 years from now. $60 a bottle for a beer this good will seem cheap. Look at wine prices. We're headed in that direction. Drink all the great beers you can for $60 now. It will be much higher then.

I think it will be exactly the opposite. Once enough people get all the rare ticks they can stomach, they'll realize their local joints aren't doing beer that much worse, and often at the same level, with much less effort to obtain it.

Wines can age for years before being bottled and released. I don't care what anyone says, Stouts don't benefit from years of barrel aging after a certain point. Hell, 12 months can be overbearing.

This is beer. Unless you're putting gold flakes and caviar in the beer, there's no excuse for non-sour beer to cost as much as wine, unless you're pushing for a craft beer crash. Hell, I've found aging bottles to not be the wisest choice, except in the rarest Barleywine instances.

I’m an insignificant Illiniois nobody, but I think it’s hilarious that people are taking the position that $60 is too expensive for a beer that is going for well over a grand on the secondary market. This is a double nilla bba stout whale from a famed producer of stout whales. $60 is a bargain IMO if you got a chance to drink one onsite. Go check out prices of burgundy from famed producers at non-marked-up retail prices; will make your $60 expenditure feel like a drop in the bucket

Again, wine is brought up? Wine!? You're comparing Stout to Burgundy!? :hugging:

Watch Cory speaking in the video a few posts above, around 5:15.

And "double" vanilla? Wtf does that even mean?

Oh, I don’t know, just simply pulled that from Corey’s description of the beer, dipshit:

“After resting for 15 months in the 15-year-old barrels, I decided I wanted an essence of Derivation Blend #2 to live on in the 2018 Vintage of O.W.K.. So, I decided to more than double the vanilla, lending to not only the luxurious vanilla presence, but also the ability of this beer to age for years to come.”

lol that's what you take away from my post? Okay then.

Don't let any of that flowery marketing fool you, this beer will never taste as good as it does today.

I think the point is that saying "double vanilla" means absolutely nothing while "doubling the amount of vanilla as in a previous blend" means a lot. It's like saying double bacon. What does that mean? Double of some nebulous amount?

Double 'Nilla sounds like the most hipster hyped up way to describe a stout ever.

I think that was the point being made. It's not double vanilla, it's double the amount.

Honestly, I don't feel $60 for an on site quality bottle is that bad. In my mind it's a much better value then paying $15 for a glass of wine or $20 for a top shelf manhattan somewhere. Hell, if people are willingly paying whatever a brewery charges and the brew sells out then it's obviously not over priced.

Above said, i don't frequent SP as much as I once did, even though I live very close by. The uptick in prices and constant flow of new releases is overwhelming for me. Lately I'm finding I get the same (or more) satisfaction drinking lower priced, easier to acquire beers.
