Hate to be that guy but “Pappy Van Winkle 10 year” doesn’t exist. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year are the barrels they used. “Pappy Van Winkle” designates the 15/20/23 year bottlings. Kinda irks me that they have a bourbon that doesn’t exist on the official description for BBT22. “Pappy” really dials up the hype though.

People on here get a pass, but it is sloppy from the brewery's side. The main thing here is that if barrel is going to connote quality, then you have to be accurate. You'd never say, "We racked this in EC18 barrels!" if you meant ECBP barrels. Conversely, you really shouldn't say Pappy if you mean ORVW or Lot B. There's an age and quality difference between these, not to mention scarcity which is obviously supposed to be a proxy for quality.

One way that this could get you into trouble with some brands and barrels is entry strength of the juice (and thus finishing proof of the juice and what's left in the barrel to mix with the beer). Not everything within the same line enters at the same proof, because they know what that product will be based on where they are planning to put it. In the case of ORVW vs. Pappy, they all start at the same proof (approx.), but maturity and individual characteristics obviously dictates which become what and how long each is aged.

We were all way over on the price of the Tavour bottle, but to be fair that was "shared", and the unknown was tavour pricing. This isn't DB, just an exclusive barrel in limited quantities. Should be less than the DB bottles, so this should be like...$35 or 40, right?

To be fair, Terminus was a collab, and all of their collabs exceed their "standard" pricing schemes for the same type of beer. (Which makes sense, they are splitting the profit.)

GIFs are easier than a photo. For a GIF, just find it on google, right click and copy image, come back and paste. The GIF shows up. By contrast, if you want to insert an image you have to save it to a hosting site (I use imgur, others use...postimage?), and "paste" it that way (more than none way to accomplish this).

Is old Rip the same recipe as Pappy and Lot B etc? Pappy is just aged longer?

The same distillate (at approx. the same proof - since it always varies a little) goes into barrels and gets placed in the locations that are known on average to be the best/consistent for that line. They taste them and slowly earmark them as it becomes apparent what each barrel will become.

So, yes, same mash bill, same distillate, just aged for different periods and proof is adjusted based on brand after being dumped.

I already knew the answer. Just pointing out how silly it is to write two paragraphs bitching about 10 year vs 12/15 etc when it's the same "pappy" recipe.

I always thought your screen name was a reference to an author, thus encouraging us all, or at least yourself, into reading more. Alas, I think I just realized it's just a sports reference.

This whole time I think we all just assumed this forum was for you and we just wanted to pay tribute with as many words as possible.

So, maybe they should just call it a Weller barrel or a Weller barrel a pappy barrel since it’s all just the same mashbill?

I think you’re onto something here. From now on all the Buffalo Trace barrels will be referred to as George T. Stagg 8 year barrels.
