For Christmas this year I received a wine cooler to use for beer cellaring, I was wondering if there was any downside to storing bottles on their sides instead of upright. All of the shelves in the new cooler are laydown and I just don't want to ruin anything by laying them over.

    Cheers!

I recently bought some 10+ year old Stout Troopers and on the label it said that they have been vertically stored. Reading this I have continued the trend to age my beers standing up.

It depends on the closure. Caps are kept upright to prevent premature rusting. If you're aging for only a year, that's probably not a concern. For corks the concern is it drying out. That's why they are stored on their side. For corked and caged bottles, the cork is so much bigger that I wouldn't be worried about it drying out and shrinking to the point where it matters. If you understand why people recommend different storage methods you realize that for the length you are aging most beers, it doesn't matter. It's only for very long aging that it really makes a difference and if you understand the logic behind the different methods, you can make an educated decision on what way is best for each beer.

One reason people prefered storing up right use to be because of yeast settlement..Days ago people did not like yeast settlement in their beers so storing them upright would allow all the settlement on the bottom. When carefully poured from the Bottle the settlements would mainly remainin the bottom
