Haven't had BA Narwhal, but I tried the original at a beer festival and it got top marks from me, had to get it when it finally came out to stores again. Wish i could get ahold of this maple stout though, see how it compares with Harpoon's Imperial Maple Tap.That was pretty underwhelming, since i expected a lot from it and got little to no maple taste or smell. Based on the love for SN Maple Stout, i think it'd be no contest.

I didn't have this year's release and I when I drank last year's it probably had some age on it. Not a lot but wasn't super fresh. I usually wait to share that type of beer with a friend so it could take a few months or so.

Wish I had one to drink now!

Barrel ageing is a fine art. The one thing that I think more and more breweries are getting better at it the art of blending. Firestone simply kicks butt at that process.

Different barrels and approach to the aging process promote different qualities in the beer. I agree in the case of Narwhal this is the first year I had the BA and it did feel a touch thinner, hotter, less plump in the BA edition. Narwhal has such a nice chewy dense imperial stout palate, with tons of malt character plus great esters blended with a good hop character. Some of that base beer character receded in a way that was not complimentary to the barrel aging elements you would hope to find.

I wonder if the NC brewery has any. I like the sound of it. But i'm eagerly awaiting tapping the keg of CBS my store has

Heard of but haven't tried. Don't get me wrong, I have had maple beers I've enjoyed, but I've had more that I haven't. I consider the ones I enjoy to be the exceptions.

We did, but sadly, it's all sold out. I think we're probably going to do another run of it in future, but don't have an exact date.

I really hope this gets bottled for more distribution outside of the breweries...
