Hopefully you're not serious. Of course it's manufactured - it's a brewery. If they weren't consistent in their brewing, and efficient in production, they wouldn't be where they are today.

Yep. I can get behind spending most of your beer money close-to-home so that good breweries have a chance to develop, you're building the local beer culture and supporting the local economy. But to never try a German beer or a Belgian beer or a beer from another part of the US, etc, etc, seems crazy. (Especially one offered to you for free, so it's not even your money!)

I do wonder how many people actually fit in that category though?

It sure seems to be trending that way, just by what I hear and see, and I bet in a year's time there will be more rather than fewer.

SN beer is tastier than 90% of the "local guys" beer I've tried. Buying less than brews for no other reason than "they are local" is silly. Think I'll grab a sixer of Torpedo today.

I'm having a hard time following the details here. While your friend's comment was rather ignorant and rude, if he was passing up your SN because he had something else he preferred then I see nothing wrong with that. If he passed it up in hopes of a craftier offer then he's a douche but I can't say I'm surprised by this behavior.

I would be thrilled to have some SN, would be really happy to find it cheaper and easier in Belgium!
This seems to be a US issue, i've never ever heard anyone say something like that in Europe at all, well except for rejecting the euro versions of bud, etc..

Every time a youngin turns down Sierra Nevada, AB InBev buys a craft brewery.

I wouldn't say offends me, but my dad bod is growing, so I'd rather take in my calories with a beer I personally think tastes better.

i would love for Sierra Nevada to make a pale ale series with their beloved original grain bill with a single hop series that rotated like stone enjoy by series(rather than adding orange flavor) Do it with cascade, galaxy, mosaic....
I think that's something even tools like this guy and the people who love SN could all rally behind....

Well, I could get on board with this except for the fact that the attitude we're looking at is a more broadly based thing than just with beer in general and flavorful beer in particular.

There was a time during the lifetime of some on this site, but back before the memory of some here had even begun, when one could go into a supermarket grocery store and one's choices for bread mostly consisted of Wonder Bread or some other form of white "wall paper paste." Similarly one's choices for cheese were between Kraft American Cheese Slices, Kraft Cheese Whiz or some other form of pre-processed "cheese" that had been developed in part by Food Scientists.

Then that began to change as popular tastes began to shift.

Now, I'd bet that in the areas where many of us live we can go into a large supermarket and still find similar breads or cheeses but we also have the choice of regionally produced and locally produced breads and cheeses (but we may have trouble finding Wonder Bread at all  ). In addition, some of those fresh breads are being made within a few hours before they hit the store shelf. Some of those cheeses are being made within 50 miles of where they are being sold and some of them use raw milk rather than pasteurized.

Similarly, without going to the supermarket I can name at least two different, fairly small, places about a mile a way from where I sit that rely heavily on and brag about their local sourcing of such things as breads, cheeses, fresh produce, and in-store preparation of meals from local ingredients.

At least twice I have been in the one which now has a bottle shop and several hundred beers on offer (but nothing from a mega brewer) and over heard two people younger than I shopping together chatting. In both cases one of them said to the other something along the lines of "No, you don't want that one, it's not really artisanal cheese (or it's not really craft beer), it comes from X and isn't really artisanal (craft). (Interestingly enough the Cheese being recommended was a blue cheese made about 35 miles from here and the other was Stilton.

So my bottom line is I'd say what we're witnessing with beer (and illustrated by the OP's example) is a side effect of a larger cultural shift that began several years ago in reaction to the increased homogenization of the things we eat and drink.

There's a difference between not liking a particular brewery'a beers, or just a few in their lineup and not even wanting to try it.

    Damn hipsters.

He probably had an IPhone in his pocket, was wearing Nike shoes, and his bicycle was probably made in a factory in China.

SN isn't my favorite brewery out there, but there's a lot worse options he could have been drinking.

Only part of the issue. I too REALLY support so many local brewers, and love to show off their wares. The point I'm tying to make is that he dismissed them out of hand, just because it was SN. Had I poured it in a glass without him knowing, probably would have enjoyed it. I think age absolutely gives some perspective to the beer scene. Try drinking tuborg gold and lowenbrau dark. The dark ages.

Nope, not quite, we both had several different Night Shift brews, so did the other guy with an open cooler. The 87 double ipa is nice and bitter, rip the taste buds off kinda nice.

Larry, I think you should start one.

One snippet from that article that I have been discussing regularly on BA threads: "...Watson said, adding that the data is evidence of a more complex and competitive environment."

It seems to be that there is plenty of craft and 'crafty' beer brands competing for the same dollars. And with new craft breweries opening at 1-2 breweries per day it is just getting more competitive.

    Cheers!

They tweaked the recipe this year. I usually buy at least 6 cases of SN every year.

Bully for him, and that sort of arrogance. I guess.
