Has anyone else noticed how a line up of beers from one brewery all tend to have the same background taste to them? I've had an IPA, DIPA, Brown Ale, Bitter, Octoberfest, etc. from the same brewery and can tell they all came from the same place. Obviously this is due to the water used and yeast strains (possibly from similar grain bills) but I wonder if this is something the brewers are aware of and/or if they try to do this. In a few cases, it has stopped me from liking a beer as much because I can taste it's similarity to another beer from that brewery that I don't like as much.

I notice the same thing. Sierra Nevada and Sixpoint come to mind.

Southern Tier definitely has an underlying taste to all of its beers, it seems intentional to me in that case though. i definitely know what you're talking about though, sometimes it puts me off if it's too blatant.

Unibroue for sure. It's in the yeast.

Stone has it too, it's probably the water like the OP says.
    I love stone's signature taste.

Lots of brewers, and breweries, have a "house yeast," which typically accounts for a similarity across styles. Water profiles will certainly also play a role.

I'd say Stone, Lagunitas, Unibroue, and many Belgian breweries have similar flavors, though I don't know how much of that is due to house yeasts and water and how much is due to them brewing a pretty small variety of beer styles.

This is absolutely normal. As well as yeast and water, every brewmaster has his or her own subconscious preferences when creating recipes, and every brewery's own combination of wort kettle and fermentation regime will affect the beer in a similar way.

In other news, different records by the same singer sound similar, and fonts by the same designer look similar.

I can make a case for a ton of breweries having their own signature taste that can be found in most of their beers. I think it would be easier for me to list breweries that don't have their own signature taste. I think it's a good thing if you can drink a beer blind and tell who brewed it because of the characteristics.

as mentioned in previous posts... house yeast would be the #1 reason you'd find similar taste profiles across numerous beers from 1 brewery.

This has a little to do with terroir and hop and malt suppliers and lot more to do with house yeast strains.
