I bought a four pack of Sixpoint Apollo yesterday and I drank one. That is one tasty Kristalweizen beer! I am a big fan of Hefeweizen beers but I really enjoyed the ‘different’ aspects of this Kristalweizen beer; it had a very noticeable lemon flavor and a bit of tartness. I think this is an excellent summertime beer!

I am guessing (and it is only a guess) that the new head brewer at Sixpoint, Jan Matysiak, was instrumental in formulating this beer. Jan Matysiak was trained at the Brewing Institute of Weihenstephan and was the brewermaster at Live Oak Brewing Company in Austin, Texas. I had the opportunity to drink Live Oak Hefeweizen while visiting family in Austin, Texas and that beer was outstanding.

There has been a number of threads on BA about Sixpoint and the lack of consistency/quality of the Sixpoint beers being produced at the Lion Brewery (all of the Sixpoint beers that are packaged in cans are produced at Lion Brewery). I have participated in these threads with statements like “I sure hope that Sixpoint and Lion can ‘learn’ how to produce quality beers together”. Well, I want to give credit where credit is due. Sixpoint Apollo is a ‘home run’ and I am hopeful that this is a positive sign that Sixpoint is ‘back on track’.

    Cheers to Sixpoint!

Everything I have had from Sixpoint has been kick ass. Apollo, Diesel, Resin, Sweet Action, Righteous, and my favorite The Crisp.

I concur on Apollo, awesome summer time brew was thinking of picking up a 4 pack tonights as a matter of fact.

“Everything I have had from Sixpoint has been kick ass. Apollo, Diesel, Resin, Sweet Action, Righteous, and my favorite The Crisp.” Based upon recent history (the last 10 months or so) you have been much luckier than other BAs (including me).

I have my figures crossed that in the near future I will also be able to state: Everything I have had from Sixpoint has been kick ass.

    Cheers!

I'm guessing it's so good because they used different yeast, obviously of german origin, instead of whatever godawful phenolic shit was being used.

I've only had Diesel, Resin, The Crisp and Bengali Tiger but I enjoyed them all. The Crisp was definitely my favorite. I'll have to try Apollo.

    Cheers.

Apollo is probably my favorite Sixpoint beer. That being said, it's nothing too mind blowing. Very refreshing, but kinda average.

There is a great video on the whole idea/creation of this beer. Check it out:

I didn't like Apollo.. it was way too sour and tart, although I believe that was their intention. I guess I'm the minority..

I really enjoy Apollo. I like that "tart" kick to it. I have picked up a few 4 packs.
It seems to be getting mixed reviews here on the forum. Some people are turned off by the tartness.

Thanks for the tip - I've been passing it by thinking it was going to be some New Age-y German Beer

I thought Apollo was pretty good, as was Diesel, wasn't a fan at all of Resin...so I guess they are hit or miss for me.

    mwvickers,

Thanks so much for posting that video; it was awesome. The only ‘downside’ was that it made be thirsty!

    Cheers!

The first four pack I had was very tart and borderline sour, very delicious. The most recent 4 pack was much less tart but equally delicious .

“The first four pack I had was very tart and borderline sour, very delicious. The most recent 4 pack was much less tart but equally delicious .” There goes that consistency/quality ‘issue’ again. I am very disappointed to hear that.:slight_frown:

    “But...equally delicious” Yeah, but:

“very tart and borderline sour” is really different from “much less tart”. A quality commercial brewery should be capable of producing ‘good’ consistent product.

You are a ‘forgiving’ beer customer but not everybody is.

I read BB1313’s post of “I didn't like Apollo.. it was way too sour and tart, although I believe that was their intention” and my first thought was that he must have a very different palate then me. Now I am pretty sure (based upon your post) that BB1313 must have tasted the ‘first’ batch that you made mention of. The Apollo that I drank had a mild tartness to it.

I was really, really, really hoping that Sixpoint had its consistency/quality issues behind them. Oh well.:slight_frown:

I don't know if they were going to go for the extreme tartness or not , but they should try to replicate it. I hope can you can experience it in the future.

I'm not positive if the overboard tart/sourness was their intention, but I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'm not sure which batch I consumed. I've only had a few Krystalweizens, and none were as sour and as tart as Apollo. I was puckering while drinking it..

“I don't know if they were going to go for the extreme tartness or not , “ I don’t think they intended for the beer to be extremely tart/sour. From their website description of Apollo: “The unmistakable flavor of a Bavarian Wheat,” A Bavarian Wheat beer is not extremely tart. A Berliner Weiss beer can be extremely tart but this is not the style they are going for.

“but they should try to replicate it.” No they shouldn’t if they want to be true to what they state of “The unmistakable flavor of a Bavarian Wheat,”

“I hope can you can experience it in the future.” I sincerely hope that I won’t experience an extremely tart Sixpoint Apollo!

One of my motivations in starting this thread was to ‘applaud’ Sixpoint in making a quality (where consistency is included with the word “quality”) beer of Apollo. After reading what you posted I almost wish I never started this thread!:slight_frown:
