A Bavarian Wheat beer should not be “puckering”. I regret to make this statement but there was indeed something ‘wrong’ with the Apollo that you drank.:slight_frown:

There was nothing wrong with it. It tasted awesome.

That's unfortunate. There's been alot of quality and consistency w/ Sixpoint since they've entered Ohio a few months ago.. Either way, I just didn't enjoy it..

The tartness/sourness was too close to mustard than lemon for me, and turned me off.

I did not expect the tart/sour vibe but I loved it! I think krystalweizen is not that great of a description for the beer I tasted. It was cloudy and according to many of the BA reviews it was cloudy for them too!

I also didn't get the "puckering" from this beer, and was wondering where people were getting this from. I thought it was one of the top American-made wheat beers I've had ever........maybe surpassing Kellerweis.

And to the second point, I thought also thought the description was weird, aren't Kristalweizens supposed to be clear?

Good news, huh Jack. You know we both sit on the same side of the fence on Sixpoint and the quality thing, so based on your recommendation I'll pick up a 4 pack.

The rollercoaster lives on, I opened a 2 month old Diesel the other night and loved it. Go figure.

Tried it last night. While I'm not the biggest fan of this style of beer, I really enjoyed it. Not overly sour so maybe they've adjusted their recipe after negative initial reviews.

“ …based on your recommendation I'll pick up a 4 pack.” Keith, based upon the posts made by BB1313 and jlordi12 the strongest recommendation I can make is for you to buy a batch of Apollo with a best by date of 01SEP2012. That particular batch is mildly tart (not puckering) and is fairly clear (not cloudy like a hefeweizen).

    Cheers!

Wait a sec, it's supposed to be "fairly" clear? I've purchased two 4-packs, the first was outstanding, second was simply good (admittedly the second 4-pack I had allergies and beer was tasting odd that weekend). Both were cloudy though, can't remember how cloudy. I also recently picked up a very fresh six pack of Kellerweis that was the cloudiest hefeweizen I've ever seen, looked like an orange smoothie. What would cause that?

Also, how's the consistency of their Crisp been for you guys?

I liked the sour notes on the very back end. Im assuming it was acid malt.

“Wait a sec, it's supposed to be "fairly" clear?” Apollo is ‘classified’ as a Kristalweizen on BA. A Kristalweizen should be clear. A Hefeweizen should be cloudy. In WVbeergeek’s review of Apollo he mentions: “I understand that they used a centrifuge process to get the heavy sediment out but retain esters and flavors that wouldn't otherwise be in there.” The one Apollo that I drank was slightly cloudy; it is much clearer than any Hefeweizen that I have ever drunk.

“I also recently picked up a very fresh six pack of Kellerweis that was the cloudiest hefeweizen I've ever seen, looked like an orange smoothie. What would cause that?” I can’t specifically comment on Kellerweis per se, but Hefeweizen beers are cloudy due to yeast being in suspension plus some protein from the wheat. For the ‘interested reader’:

“Also, how's the consistency of their Crisp been for you guys?” Somewhat ironically this was the beer that I personally had a quality/consistency problem with last fall (Sept. 2011). I first had Crisp (it was called Sehr Crisp) on draft about a year ago (April 2011?). That draft Sehr Crisp beer was very tasty; an excellent example of a German style Pilsner. That draft beer was brewed at the Sixpoint Brooklyn Brewery. I had high expectations when I purchased the canned Crisp last September (which was contract brewed at the Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre, PA). I was greatly disappointed to taste a high level of diacetyl in that batch of beer. Diacetyl is frequently described as having a buttery or butterscotch taste. There should be no perceptible diacetyl taste in a well-made lager. Breweries sometimes conduct what is called a diacetyl rest towards the end of primary fermentation to permit the yeast to ‘process’ the diacetyl. Diacetyl can also be produced by a bacterial infection. I have no way of knowing the exact cause of the diacetyl problem in that particular batch of beer but as a beer consumer and a fan of Sixpoint beers that was a disappointing experience. I have yet to purchase another four pack of Crisp beer since that one purchase last year.

Can you relate your personal experiences with Crisp beer?

    Cheer!

I had a ton of Apollo this weekend at a camping trip and loved it. It was like a mild sour. I'm assuming brettanomyces or lactobacillus. I've brewed a fair amount with sour malt and that isn't really the type of sourness it delivers. This beer had much more of a "wild" character to me, but it was nicely subdued. No idea, though, just speculating based on my taste/scent.

That being said, I was surprised to see it described as a Hefeweizen/Kristalweizen. The definitive characteristics of those styles are the banana/clove aromatics, which were nowhere to be found in this. I love the beer and will be drinking a ton of it this summer, but think it was mismarketed somewhere along the way.

Your experience was very similar to mine. Only I purchased a few 4-packs last fall (I've never had it at the brewery) and it was amazing. I purchased it again in February and it was overly sweet, almost buttery as you described, not "crisp" at all. I haven't purchased it since, but I'm willing to give it another whirl.

See, the first time I had it it definitely didn't did not taste like a mild sour. I got a ton of banana out of it, particularly in the nose.

“I purchased it again in February and it was overly sweet, almost buttery as you described, not "crisp" at all.” I am very disappointed to hear that.

I am starting to think that every batch of Sixpoint beers is a ‘crap shoot’.:slight_frown:

Hrm, interesting. It's very possible that they ferment in primary with Hefe yeast, then filter it and add the wild yeast or bacteria at canning. That way, it wouldn't be sour at all when fresh, but would continue to develop sourness as it sat on shelves.

This is what Orval does with their beer. It's why fresh Orval tastes like a standard Belgian Pale, whereas aged Orval is very sour and funky.
