OK, so I acrtually agree with this post.

On the "1% within Beer Advocate", I think we are simply misunderstanding each other-- I totally believe (and supply one myself with great beers) that there are many beer experts who are quiet or not on BA, taste buds are genetic after all, and many people just taste things better than others. What I was trying to say more was that this chat indeed represents superpassionate beer people (again, superpassionate beer people are also NOT in this chat), and most of the beer market is much different than the top 20 posters here. Many of them are, as you say, "flavor of the month" people, or "tick the box" types, which may not be your preferred customer, which I can completely understand. I am actually not, I would rather have repeats of the same great beer and I often skip new beers due to the hop bill or figuring it is highly unlikely it will be better than beers I have enjoyed in the past, but I also want some variety as the same beer every night is less fun.
There is indeed something to be said for a great overall experience: location, convenience, service, consistency, with a solid product of course. (Danny Meyer's restaurant group excelled at this model). Three's has done this to some extent, Captain Lawrence with family friendly model, and many more that other know about. And I totally understand the benefit of this-- imagine, walking around the corner to a place with great vibe (maybe food too), where you can meet and talk to the brewer who is passionate, where you never have a line, where the beer is very good. You can take you wife, your co-workers, your family there and everyone has a fun night. There's never a line, and you are never disappointed. Most beer lovers in the world would be really happy to go there and be passionate customers. However, many, many of us on this chat do not want this. We will do crazy things with time/money to taste beers that are better.

So I think I disagree with you in this way: Somehow to me new Sixpoint beers seem a clear notch below the best beers that the best breweries in this area area currently putting out. Many of the beers at WF are this, or are 2 steps below. I am not the only one and there is data (not perfect) that backs this up. And I grant that others disagree with me. I am curious why you "big boys" cannot do this-- whether you do not really need to compete to make your model work, or you somehow are unable to. Part of this is that it is early (although Grimm and Eq were out of the gates fast), partly you have chosen hops that are not crowd favorites and have not brewed many DIPAs yet, all of which are relevant.
If you were to make a Citra beer as good as All Citra everything, which is not new, is again one of my favorite beers of the year (in its multiple canning), which was available at OH on a wednesday with no line (and some amazing beers on tap), that would shut me up!

Wish I could make this release but I'll be in Texas, hitting up at least 10 breweries down there! My friend Anthony may be going to the release I have to confirm if he ordered, if so I'm stilling some of his beers

Which Texas breweries? I'll be down there the 12-15 as well. I would think @Sixpoint has my personal calendar as I've been out of town for all but one of their releases.

Well, it if helps, Rozzom, Sensodyne is one of the only toothpastes without SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate), which is a harsh cleaning agent that is the main ingredient in most generic shampoos. It makes a huge difference in triggering "canker sores" for some people, which I used to get all the time as a kid before we figured it out!

Nice! I'll be in Austin from the 9th-11th, San Antonio 12-15th. Austin, I plan on- Oddwood Ales, Jester King, Wright Bros, Lazarus, St. Elmo. San Antonio- Kunstler, Freetail, Weathered Souls, Southerleigh, Ranger Creek. We'll see if I'm able to hit all of them lol.

I didn't see Live Oak mentioned on there...I would put that near the top of the list.

I had Hootie, Hootie Hoo, and the Hi-Resin. So not everything but I only have one liver and cannot try every beer from every brewery and sometimes I will skip based on brewery or hop bill to allow room for milk for the kids in my fridge!
And believe it or not I traded a HVB linelyfe beer for the Hi-Res !!!!!!

That was actually on my list, I didn't go through my phone to see everything I wrote down. Whether or not I get to all these places is another story haha.

Main reason I'm happy my parents moved back to Texas is hopefully getting my hands on their Hef.

Live Oak also makes a good Pilsner. I bought a 6-pack last fall when I was visiting my sister in New Braunfels and I enjoyed drinking those beers.

    Cheers!

The hell you thinking trading HVB for Hi-Res when the latter is on grocery store shelves? :sunglasses:

It's too bad you are basing your opinion on only those three beers. I can understand, however, why you say that of what you've had, their beers are not best in class -- those three aren't. I enjoyed them all, but they weren't top notch: they were well made beers that were easy to drink and enjoy. The benefit of having been to all but the first release, though, is having been able to see how their hoppy beers have improved each release. Anti-Resin, as a hazy pale ale, was a definite improvement on that kind of style over Hootie and Party Hat, and Power Ballad surpassed all of them (to my palate). The latter would qualify amongst the best of the style in NYC to me.

That said, I think the best beers they've put out haven't been the IPAs -- it's been 4Beans, V Righteous and Alpenflo (Power Ballad is almost at that point, in my mind). I think it can be fairly said, based on a scan of offerings from NYC breweries recently, that these are best in class amongst that peer group. Doesn't help that I can't really find many comparisons, of course, so I would be happy to be proven wrong. I'm always looking for more BA imperial porters, BA rye ales, and Helles to drink in a city flooded with hops.

I know a lot of the back-and-forth has been about how Shane phrases things, and I get it. Is Power Ballad better than Other Half/EQ/HVB/Sand City/whoever else beers? Well, hell folks, who's to say? That's where the preferences and biases that have been talked about in this and last month's thread come into play and weigh more than the beer itself. Great example -- @RobNewton -- starter of April's OH thread -- and I -- starter of Sixpoint's April thread -- disagreed on who did Idaho 7 single hop better b/t OH and Sixpoint -- care to guess who chose which?

At the end of the day, we're dissecting language, personality, and logic minutiae. NYC has a lot of great breweries, who make a lot of great beer, and who's best or what's top level is subjective and, to be honest, kind of irrelevant. A lot of places in the U.S. would kill to have what we have at our MTA-bastardized-subway-tips. What say we get to drinking and enjoying beer?

Thanks for your insight here. I'd also like to not use these threads and our respective precious time on planet earth trying to create "gotcha" moments for each other and bickering over semantics. There's no satisfaction in this at all and honestly I think some of the people who read these Sixpoint threads might find it entertaining but most of them find it obnoxious and boring. Also, it just seems petty when others such as @RobNewton pointed out we can just focus the discussion on the beer and the pipeline of innovation that is coming out. As I said before you have our commitment on that, but its a two-way street.

I have some more thoughts and feedback on your comments as well as @ScottKramer 's latest insights, but I'm about to meet up with a dear friend for some Dutch craft beers and I'm already running late.

@RobNewton, @ScottKramer, and maybe @rozzom (but I think you understand what I'm going to say) or others....

Any time a brewery representative participates in these forums you gotta consider their angle as a business. What they say, or don't say, will almost always be marketing of their business to some degree. Still, brewery representatives can provide fantastic information about their beer, the industry, and feedback that you cannot get anywhere else. Some brewers insert more marketing (e.g. Sixpoint) than others, but you have to filter that stuff out and hold onto the good information. It doesn't do anyone any good to go tit for tat on semantics of marketing with brewers, because if you make the forums hostile for them, then we may lose the great information brewers can provide everyone. You may score a few "likes" from random people on the internet of similar mind who think you're sticking it to "the man," but I assure just as many people are quietly rolling their eyes at you, and if a brewery representative decides it's not worth their time participating here then everyone loses.

Yup, I noticed that Greg Koch (Stone Brewing) stopped participating on BA after some unpleasantness and derision directed at him on a European forum.

I suppose somebody might make a causation vs. correlation argument as regards to Greg's decision to no longer participate but I am personally convinced here.

    Cheers!

Hootie, Hootie Hoo cans, Anti Resin, DDH Resin, and a few beers I vaguely remember from the anti resin release. Maybe an idaho 7 farm beer, a pale ale, and two others including a porter.

Question, when something like Bengali is on at one of these events, is this Bengali from the Tennessee location or is it from the Red Hook facility?

@Sixpoint is welcome to say “I think my beer is fucking great” all day long and I’m a) not going to have an issue with it and b) I’m not going to respond

But if he makes claims that they have data that objectively places them amongst the best of breed, then I’m going to ask how that works exactly, because I don’t see how that’s possible. And if I get BS responses I’ll keep asking. Even if that means you rolling your eyes. This is a forum. We’re all equals here. A brewery doesn’t get special treatment, and doesn’t get to make big claims without also dealing with follow up questions

And do people really post for likes?

And come on man that’s pretty patronizing
