I'm not a huge BBA Stout/Porter fan but my Dad loves them. For Christmas I made a basket of a bunch of heavy hitters- Bourbon County, Impending Descent, Big Bad Baptista, Triple Barrel Baptist and a four pack of 3Beans BBA Porter. He sent me a text last night raving about it and even said my mom loved it. My mom only drinks Michelob Ultra so that's very impressive. Great work @Sixpoint !

I have to agree that bba 3beans is awesome. It is surprisingly easy to drink for a 10% beer, has plenty of bourbon flavor with a good coffee taste.

I'm glad you have a consistent definition of what is a porter and a stout in your brewery. If it works, cool!. Although, as has been debated ad nauseam in BA, this is by no means universal (personally, I fall in the camp that think there are better arguments for porter and stout being the same thing, in modern times).

What was the best triple rye you ever had? I'm thinking you never had one, because it doesn't exist!

We're super amped to share this one with you next week at the can release at the brewery (sneak preview from the barrels that is - finished product won't be available until March), but we started with a base rye ale with rye malt, crystal rye malt, and chocolate rye.....then we laid this sucker down on virgin Woodford Rye Reserve barrels, and also some virgin Widow Jane Bourbon barrels.....there's nothing else quite like this, so it will be really fun to see your reaction...

the blending session from last week already was epic, and with a couple more months this is really going to be something special....

Yeah, its a completely unique flavor profile and not your run-of-the-mill barrel aged beer by any means. We wanted to start things off unique and different with the BA Beans series, and this really builds on that. If you are a fan of rye whiskeys or rye in general, you are going to love this.

Oh - and happy to know you will be able to buy this on Sunday in Indiana too. :-)

not familiar with the formulation approach on that one or the barrel component, is that a tripel rye ale aged in three different types of barrels? sounds vaguely similar, but definitely not the same...

edit: I looked it up, and it looks like theirs is only a double rye, but they use two different types of rye barrels...

so ours uses three different types of rye, and a blend of rye and bourbon barrels to to create the BA Righteous....

thanks for tipping me off on the beer, I'm going to try to track it down....they are one of my favorite breweries, surprised I hadn't tried this one before.....

I can add some clarity to this. Our first Templeton Rye barrel-aged beer was Rye on Rye a few years back. For that beer, we used two types of malted rye in the base beer and then aged it in freshly-emptied Templeton Rye barrels. A couple years after that beer, we created Rye on Rye on Rye (using the same base beer) by aging fresh beer in Templeton Rye barrels for a year-ish and then transferring those barrels into another set of freshly-emptied Templeton Rye barrels for six to eight months.

Wait, Rye on Rye on Rye was aged 18+ months without any fresh base mixed in? That must be the longest aged Boulevard beer?

I enjoy it, I just had no idea it was that long. You guys should really put that on the label!

Correct. Rye on Rye on Rye is 100% barrel-aged beer. Rye on Rye is a blend of 2/3 aged and 1/3 fresh beer.

I don't know that I'd say it's the longest aged beer we brew as portions of the blend for Love Child releases can be 3+ years old.

If you gentlemen ever want to have a low-key rye beer tasting on neutral ground, I'll gladly offer up my house. It's not exactly half-way between your respective breweries, but I may have some frequent flyer miles I could donate to the cause.

I did a tasting at a fan's house out in PA a few years ago (he runs a video blog about beer) and had a great time.

If Mr. Boulevard/Brewer wants to come out with his beer, I will commit to meeting him out there to doing a tasting!

    cheers

No pressure, @JeremyDanner, but if you're looking for an excuse to visit the Philly area, my offer stands. I'd be thrilled to host you gents for a tasting, and can think of a few local Beer Advocates who'd love to join us. Beer message me if it strikes your interest.
