Anyone know what's going on with Skull Coast brewing? I heard they transported themselves from somewhere in SC to Hickory, NC. I also heard (and saw pictures) months and months ago that the brewery was going to open "soon." I'm not really sure what's going on with them. Any information would be welcomed. Their Dead Man's porter was awesome!

    Thanks.

For whatever reason, they seem to have a slight history with disputes, though this one does not seem to be their fault.

Seems like they've pretty well soiled their reputation with craft beer fans in the Carolinas, relocation is probably the best option.

If no one minds my asking (since I am recently back to the Carolinas after a couple of years away), what other disputes have they been involved in?

It seems like the current one is nothing they are at fault for...

They got into a dispute with RJ Rockers (who contract brewed for them). And then add in their "interesting" use of social media, which involved people here from BA.

I haven't posted many reviews, but check out the one I did for Dead Man's Porter for a funny example of their childish behavior.

I think they also angered a lot of people by taking shots at other local breweries.

the facebooks said they are once again looking for a home...I love pirates and like nomad brewers but this is been pretty unusual to watch over the years... It is possible that a group of people have such bad luck trying to open a brewery or are they the problem? I've met them and thought they were nice guys and but this seems to be harder for them than most...

IMO, not very difficult. Scallywag was generic and maelstrom lives up to its name - a mess. Personally i think it's a dogfight between that and frothy's photuris for the worst beer in the the Carolinas. Admittedly I never got to try the porter.

They are probably Six Million Dollars in at this point as well. Tough to quickly achieve a ROI on that amount. My guess is that they found a new bunch of VCs who agreed to back this -- as long as they got rid of the old leadership.

There are many "craft" beers coming out of our state these days that are not just wholly mediocre, but IMO borderline undrinkable. To my absolute astonishment, many of them seem to be garnering high praise on here (and elsewhere). No wonder venture capitalists are willing to throw money at any and every brewery that pops up -- or somehow sticks around for years without, you know, actually running a production facility. Apparently they are actually believing everything they read on the Internet.

I doubt many professional venture capitalists are investing in start-up craft breweries. I think most of the start-up capital is coming from individual investors with some risk capital to burn - the same crowd that invests in restaurants.

Well in their defense on the rum thing...it sounds like the new owners are just inheriting the barrels that were already purchased by the old owners. Might as well blend, bottle and sell. Make a little money, get the name back out there.

Glad to see the old owners had a long term plan...but no short term (aka startup) plan. :grimacing:

Hoping the new owners have their head on straight, which curiously, have still not been announced of who they are.

I'm not convinced there are actually new owners yet -- but that's just me.
