Sometimes when I am writing up a response to a thread, what I am typing takes an extremely long time to appear on screen (severe lag) or it just degenerates into utter mush of random letters that look like my cat just wandered across my keyboard.

Is it just a case of "sucks to be me" or is this something other people experience?

I've never had that problem, but I have noticed that this site for some reason---maybe due to whatever kind of scripting they do---uses a lot of memory (sometimes up to a GB, and not just in the photo-intensive threads). Is your computer kind of old?

It's not site, it's you. Sounds like a resource/browser issue on your end.

This site doesn't use a lot of memory either, and our pages are compressed. For example the main forum page is only 18.2 KB compressed. The main page of a WBAYDN? thread is around 18 KB too; videos and images are being pulled from other sources. Uncompressed is still relatively small.

OP, I occasionally have a minor issue like you described, but I've discovered that my old pc is to blame. Usually it is either Windows or my anti-virus software that is going through an automatic update and is hogging memory. (I don't know if that is officially the right terminology for the technical reason, but it's something like that.) Shortly after I finish hearing the noise from the hard drive being hit on, I have normal speed activity on BA. So I agree with Todd, it's your pc that is causing the issue.

I'm not sure what 18KB 'compressed' means, but here's an experiment.

    ---
New chrome incognito session, so no cookies, and antivirus is off in windows 7.

    ---
    Open main page.

    ---
Open a few tabs from the forum, a couple of beer reviews, check that none have linked to more than two images.

    ---
Close the whole window, open a new incog. window again.

So I saw a bit more than 350MB memory used in a couple minutes of clicking around.

It's not particularly worse than a lot of 'web 2.0' (or whatever it's called now), but it's enough that it can slow an older computer down after a bit of browsing. A mac seems to handle a lot of this stuff better than windows, but linux is not too different.

That's the browser, not the site.
