Trekking to Sly Fox (Phoenixville) this weekend. Any beers that are a 'must try?' Also, anything on the food menu that's particularly good (or bad)? TIA!
it's a way different atmosphere from brewpubs that you're used to. very lit family restaurant style decor. their food is kind of meh. nothing that really stands out. typical bar fair. i always seem to get the buffalo style shrimp, though. and sundays are $1 tacos. but they're what you'd expect $1 tacos to be. nothing really stands out in their beers, either. they tend to not have rare stuff that they tap. i've always liked their different saison variations, though. and any of their german style bock/dopplebocks if they have any on, but i doubt they will this time of year. they have a counter pressure growler filler station, though, so take a growler home with you. one thing, though, is that they sell Stonekeep Meadery by the glass --- if they have the hibiscus mead, i would highly recommend getting a glass of that.
Below is the tap list of the Sly Fox Phoenixville brewpub right now via: http://www.slyfoxbeer.com/index.php/front/beer_list I also added some of my opinions. PHOENIXVILLE… Belgian Blonde: I think this beer is just OK Brewer's Select Pale Ale #6 – Wakatu: This is a ‘new’ beer featuring the Wakatu hop. I haven’t tried this beer. Chester County Bitter: Available on hand pump. A nice easy drinking Bitter but not exciting in any way. Grisette: a pleasant Farmhouse ale Helles Golden Lager: I think Sly Fox makes an excellent Helles beer! O'Reilly's Stout: a nice dry stout but not my favorite style of beer. Phoenix Pale Ale: An OK Pale Ale Pikeland Pils: A Northern German style Pilsner (i.e., very hoppy). This is one of my favorite pilsners. I think it tastes better on draft and I really, really like when they provide this unfiltered: Keller Pils. Pughtown Porter: I never had this beer. Royal Weiss: a pleasant drinking Hefeweizen. One of my favorite US craft brewed Hefeweizen beers. Rt. 113 IPA: Sometimes I like this beer and sometimes I don’t. Not sure why? Saison de Cuivre: a ‘new’ beer that I haven’t tried yet. Saison Vos: a very nice Saison. I always get one of these when it is on tap. As regards the food I would say that it is good for the money. My favorites are Doc’s Greek Salad (with chicken added) and the Chicken Gyro. They also have a special available which is generally very good. I have run into the head brewer (Brian O’Reilly) at the brewpub several times. He is a great guy and very open in talking about beer making (he has told me which strains of yeast he has used on particular beers and other beer making stuff). Cheers!
With a year of aging, I think Ichor is the best non-Belgian brewed Quad I've had. Grab a bottle to take home, they sell it in 750mL corked and caged bottles
I live near Sly Fox and unfortunately I do not think it is worth a stop. I much prefer Victory in Downingtown or Iron Hill in Phoenixville. Just MHO
I tried both of these the other day and they were quite good. The Wakatu is on the sweet side with a ton of tropical hop flavor. The saison is also tasty, somewhat dry and earthy, not quite as good as the Grisette.
