So I am heading to Troy OH (outskirts of Dayton). Could anyone know where I might find some goodies to bring back to Chicago. I would like to take home some Fathead; Jackie O's; or anything else I might be overlooking. The only bottle shop that area that looks promising is Bottle No 121. Also, I like to eat so any good restaurant reccomendations are welcomed as well as any good bars pouring something worth checking out. I feel like this one is going to be a difficult one....
If Troy doesn't have any bottles to offer I'd try here http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26447/view=beerfly only 10-15 minutes right off the highway.
Fatheads you will probably find easy enough. You can maybe track down some Jackie O's Chomolungma Honey Nut Brown or Firefly Amber in cans. Anything else you need to go to a bottle release for. A great bottle shop is Belmont Party Supply and they will take care of you very well (http://www.schwartzbeer.com/).
If you have time to drive 30-45min toward Dayton, here are some restaurant / bar options. Chappy's (in Moraine - 10-15min south of downtown) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16406/view=beerfly http://www.chappystaproom.com/Pages/index.htm South Park Tavern (near downtown) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/17794/view=beerfly http://southparktavern.com/ Right now they have 2 Jackie O's and 3 Dark Horse beers on tap Jimmy's Ladder 11 (near downtown) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26090/view=beerfly http://jladder11.com/ Tanks (near downtown) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/8662/view=beerfly http://tanksbarandgrill.com/ Luckys (downtown in the Oregon District) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26090/view=beerfly King's Table (near Wright State University) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26090/view=beerfly
Ironically is just read on the Dayton Beer Geeks Facebook that BW3 in Troy was tapping a keg of GI Night Stalker at 6 pm tonight. This may not excite you being from Chicago, but maybe there will be some more interesting things on tap.
I live just north of Dayton and work in Troy. The store in Troy you referenced is new and I have not been. I have heard the selection is not the best. Your two best bets within 15 minute drive are probably Liquor and Wine Warehouse which BuckTuckian posted a link for and Miami Valley Wine and Spirits in Tipp City (less than 10 minute drive - Ask for Scott if you go here). Both have pretty decent selection but Liquor and Wine Warehouse has an aisle of single bottles that you can buy singles. Belmont Party Supply is probably the best in Dayton area but it would be probably a 35-40 minute drive. Belmont has a better international selection but in regards to domestic craft beer, I can't think of a whole lot that Belmont has that you can't get at the two stores I mentioned. You shouldn't have any problem finding Fat Heads Head Hunter or Brew Kettles White Rajah if you like IPA's. You can also find Weyerbacher and Troegs which I don't think Illinois gets. I have not seen any Jackie O's in the area. I have heard some other areas of Ohio getting some cans but not aware of any in Dayton area. Feel free to PM me if you have any other specific questions.
bottle 121 is ok, pretty new and doesn't have a huge selection but you might find some fatheads or brew kettle beers there. agree with the points about miami valley and liquor and wine warehouse being you're best bet if you don't want to make the drive down to belmont party supply in dayton(which is probably 15-20 mins south of liquor and wine warehouse). haven't been to miami valley in a bit but i think liquor and wine has a larger selection. they had white rajah earlier today when i was there as well as a bunch of other good brew kettle beers. i didn't see if they had headhunter or not but i think fatheads recently started to date their bottles so i would be weary about bottles without a date on them.
So I did get back from that trip. Thanks for all the suggestions. Belmont Supply was def the best store for beer but Liquor and Wine Warehouse was a close second as I really liked that they had 4 beers on tap, I just wish the place was more inviting. I really like Luckys....the staff was super nice...I didnt eat there just drank. South Park was a pretty good spot too....good beer and pretty good food. I got the Cuban which I really enjoyed.
