Just opened an Anchor IPA that had a great aroma when I poured it but was only OK tasting, not nearly as good as their other brews. What beers have excited you with their aroma only to disappoint you in the flavor department?

This is an easy one for me. Southern Tier's Crème Brulee. The only beer I've ever had that I truly hated and could not finish.:grimacing:

Maybe it's just me, but I would say that most beers smell better than they taste. I wonder if that has something to do with taste in general being a less nuanced/accurate sense than smell, or maybe it's about anticipation? Maybe I develop preconceived notions based on the smell? Whatever it is, I often have the same experience with whiskey as well.

edit - I responded to the title, not the post content. neither of those beers disappointed me. they did smell better than they tasted, though.

Boxcar pumpkin Porter by Starr hill. It smelled like it had plenty of cinnamon and nutmeg. The actual taste leaves you searching for it.

This I agree with. It smelled good but fell completely apart in the flavor department.

Lagunitas Sucks did this to me just last night. The aroma was definitely a 4+, but the taste made me wonder why the Untappd ratings were so strong.

Rogue Maple Bacon Voodoo Doughnut. Smelled like breakfast in a bottle. I tried, but just couldn't get through it.

Mosaic IPA from Lost Nation. Granted, it's a pale/session IPA. It smells like wonderful mosaic hops and you can even inhale the aroma through your mouth, but the actual liquid only gets the bitterness of the hop and doesn't get the fruity character.

In the same vein, Maine Beer 2 was disappointing. The aroma is wonderful, but it only really has bitterness. It didn't really deliver on the aroma.

Both of these are lower alcohol pale/sessions, so it shouldn't necessarily be surprising that they didn't have the body or whatever to support the hops fully.

The real question is…have you ever had one that tasted better than it smelled?

Although I still like the beer and can easily finish a bottle, Creme Brulee smells absolutely amazing but the taste just isn't the same.

Judge a few homebrew competitions and this becomes the norm. I'd say less so commercially, but I've also judged far less of those.
