I think a lesson in retro-nasal breathing would be helpful. It doesn't completely give you all the flavors you smell, but some of them.

    Finch's Hardcore Chimera.

Not a bad beer by any stretch of the imagination, but the taste doesn't live up to the nose.

Girardin Gueuze Black Label. I love gueuze of all kinds, but this had a very off putting Pledge like bite that tasted synthetic to me. It smelled AMAZING though.

Last Snow. Decadent coconut on the nose. Faint coconut and thin porter on the palate.

Gotta watch the dates on Lagunitas' beers. I've gotten some old Sucks and it smelled awesome, but was a vague resemblance of what it should've tasted like.

For me, it was Second Fiddle. The can was about 5 weeks old, so I'm not sure if that made a difference. Smell was amazing and super hoppy and fruity. The taste though was more like Hopslam and sweet and boozy. Lots of alcohol. From the aroma I thought I was going to get another top tier VT IPA.

this post is funny (but true...somehow) since nearly 3/4 of taste is brought upon by smell. i'd second the session IPA comment.

Westy 12 smelled wayyyy better than it tasted. Although, to be fair as it warmed up it gradually tasted better and better. Big let down for me.

Founders Sweet Repute on draft. The aroma was boozy as all hell and had no complexity, like I was smelling cheap bourbon. The flavor was excellent though. Way smoother than the aroma lead on and the vanilla notes were on point.

I find this happens a LOT with IPAs that are between 6 and 12 weeks old. The aroma often won't have fallen off yet but the flavor is a malty mess.
