Brasserie le Gue des Moines ‘La Bruguieroise’ Brune.,. Cheeeeers!

Dark beer brewed and bottled in an old Belgian brickworks with artisanal know-how. 7.5% ABV.

Rich flavors! It’s brewed with smoked malt, has aromas of peat and coffee, just a tad of ash tray.,..
The smoky taste comes out more as the brew warms, yet doesn’t overpower the experience. There’s a dry sweetness holding it together. Well balanced.

My brain imagines a Guinness Foreign Extra put in a smoker overnight.,. with great results.,.

    Fair State Grodziskie
    [IMG]

Appearance: Clear pale yellow, good head.

    Smell: Nice smoky oak smell.

Taste: Hits with some ashy smoke right away, gives a little wheaty/bready note in the mid-palate, then finishes with a long-lasting smoke kick.

Overall: Man, I love smoky beers and this really hits the spot! Nice smoke flavor throughout, with a touch of wheat. If only there was a year-round grodziskie in 12oz cans here in MN, a guy can dream I suppose!

We get a (very) few Fair State offerings here. I am hoping to see this at some point.

Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche, brewed with oak-smoked malts. Big smoky aromas upon popping the cap, but not pungent or overpowering. This was recommended to me by the curator of a beverage catering shop in Ohio when I told her I was looking for a Grodziskie, which they did not have. This'll do just fine. Prost!

Was just at the brewery and got to try this on tap, right out of a wooden keg. Absolutely delicious beer!

Ha, ha... Visiting Schlenkerla has been a bucket list want of mine for years. My wife understood that no matter what else we did in Bamberg, visiting Schlenkerla was an absolute must.

Schlenkerla is definitely head and shoulders above all other in this category.

But, Von Trapp Trosten isn't bad.

I did. Only briefly unfortunately. I had a bus to catch after tarrying much too long at Schlenkerla.

Fantastic place that I wished we had more time to visit. The place just exuded charm and personality. The food there looked great. Just had one beer, but it was very good. The Ungespundetes kellerbier. Will definitely spend more time there the next time we visit.

We were only in Bamberg for half a day unfortunately. That limited my ability to hit all the beer related spots I'd hoped to visit.

As you know, I'm an IPA kind of guy. After a week in Germany and the Czech Republic, I could easily become Mr. Lager-head without any effort.

During our two week stay in the Czech Republic I solely drank lagers but my wife, who is a hophead, drank IPAs whenever they were available at the pub/craft beer bar we were visiting at the moment. She did drink lagers at certain places (e.g., when we visited U Fleků brewpub, Únětický Pivovar, etc.).

    Na Zdravi

For me it doesn't matter if a beer is an ale or a lager. The only thing I ask of the beer I'm drinking is that it have plenty of flavor and not be boring. Even the few craft failutes I've had over the years, if they at least have plenty of flavor, I'll at least give them style points in my review. The one thing I object to are beers where I feel the flavor profile has been intentionally dubbed down. I'm sure you know what I'm referring to.

I did not taste any lagers in Germany or the Czech Republic where I felt the brewer had dumbed down the flavor profile.

Been years but once had JackAbby Fire in the Ham, remember tasting smoked bacon in that one. A lot of meat flavor not just smoke vs other smoked beers I've enjoyed since including the German offerings

VonTrapps seasonal has been mentioned, love that every year, bought two 6ers

I cannot imagine the pain of coming all the way across the Atlantic and only getting a half day in Bamberg. Hope you can stay longer next time.

We went to a lot of other different places in Germany, Austria and Holland on this trip. This was a curated trip, and I was just glad that Bamberg was even on the schedule. If I had been arranging the itinerary, we would obviously have stayed longer in Bamberg. As it was, I was just happy to be able to visit the places I visited.

    Reading through your posts:

    1. You need several days to experience Bamberg. A couple of weeks is more to my liking.

    2. There are German beers that have been dumbed down, and those with defects like Diacetyl.

    3. Klosterbräu has a good Rauchbier.

Jeez, I totally neglected this thread.

Enjoyed this amazing 2012 bottle at Easter! Fave smoked beer yet.
