Im not a big fan of smoked beers period.Just don't really appreciate them out of all the styles it's my least favorite whether they are stouts, porters, etc. My question is for those that do enjoy them and know them well.If you have ever cellered one does the smokiness ever tone down??

Yes the smokiness will temper down a bit but will still be there. Maybe just try an example that is a little less smoky

To this day the only beer I've ever poured out has been Surly Smoke. Got it on a whim because I like Surly, but learned very quickly, I do not care for that style. I'm sure it's a good beer for fans of the style, but for me, just a few sips was about all I could do.

I really enoyed the Stone SMoked porters . this they had 3 all together , i had the smoked porter and the Vanillia smoked porter, both were very tastey not over powered by the smoke.

So did the smoke character subside when you cellared them?

Only cellared the Smoked Vanilla and yes very much so was too sweet as a matter of fact, had a huge Vanillia taste up from almost like drinking pure extract ..

My favorite beer of all time is a smoked beer. Also, one of my least favorites of all time is a smoked beer. It's a very tricky style to get right, but when a brewer does, it can be as complex -- and highly drinkable -- as any beer out there.

I like Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen too, just had one a few nights ago actually and posted it on here. I still find it impressive that they can make something with such a flavor punch so drinkable.

Am I right in guessing that is the favorite beer you were talking about?

Indeed. It's also a beer that gets better and reveals more and more complexity the more you drink of it.

Haha, I was waiting for something along those lines. I had three the other night and they all tasted the same, which is delicious, but I am going to give the concept another go and see where it takes me. Cheers!

I've only dumped a few beers in my life and one was a smoked. I should try another one some time but . . .

AK smoked porter has been described by the brewer to go through a phase where the smoke diminishes, then it returns. I have had a 10 year old one that was very Smokey.

try Epic Smoked & Oaked Belgian-Style Ale, oh so amazing. It's a limited release but I still see it here and there on shelves in Wisc in Woodmans for example.

I like smoke beers a lot but I've never aged one. If you want something with a lighter smoke taste you should try Scotch Ales. Technically speaking, I suppose you could call them smoked beers but smoked malt is not the primary focus of this style. I would suggest Founders Dirty Bastard. They try to get Scotch Ales to taste like smoked peat malts, which are used to make Scotch Whiskey. Its a very earthy smokey taste. I like it a lot!!

Thanks for the replys all.Ive had a few mentioned..dirty bastard was good pretty tasty but I wouldnt consider it a smoked beer per say.

Stone vanilla smoked porter was prob one of my least favorite.Nothing against them as brewers ,they are world class for sure.

Maybe I'll give smoked beers another chance.Till then I still cringe at the thought of them..:sunglasses:

If I'm not mistaken, brewers will actually use smoked peat malts to make a Scotch Ale. If I am wrong about this, perhaps another BA could correct me. But that is why I actually consider them to be like a smoked beer of a different kind.
