There is no general 'base' for a rauchbier aside from the beer that is being smoked (using smoked malt, obviously).

Just a few examples (aside from the märzen):

And again, to answer the OP, the only smoked schwarz I've had was from Jack's Abby (somone also mentioned it above). It's year-round but JA only distributes in MA for the time being.

Ok, would it be fair to say "traditional" rauchbier is closer to a marzen/Oktoberfest base?

The closest generally accepted German "style" for the traditional base beer would be Lagerbier.

Smoked schwarzbier sounds great, but when I'm in a dark smoky mood, I dig out an Aecht Schlenkerla Urbock.

Thirsty Dog Rail Dog is exactly what you are asking for, and it is damn good. Best smoked beer you buy for less than $10/6 pack

Trapp in VT has a schwarzbier with a nice smokey essence, called Trosten Bier. Unfortunately you have to go there to get it, and it's seasonal :slight_frown:

I actually don't care for Jack's Abby's smokey schwarzbier, but I'm in the minority on that.
