Yeah so the full answer to the question is:

"No. This particular brand, and the people associated with this brand is key, and the fact that I've been in Portsmouth over 20 years - this has been a staple in Portsmouth. And I believe in it - I believe there's a lot of things we can do to reinvigorate this brand - all the assets are there, all the people are there, all the capabilities are there, it's just how it plays out"

(transcription is hard and I cleaned it up a bit, but it's pretty close)

The business jargon is obnoxious and who knows if this guy really has any idea what he's doing here, but he's basically saying all the things you'd want Smutty's new owner to say. I'm not sure who you're picturing buying the brewery that would be substantially better.

Well done on this transcription. To add a little - this guy is a smart dude and if he had never been involved in an auction before, he has researched them and is now an expert at every minute detail. Same thing will go with a brewery - if he ends up being the ultimate high bidder and walks away the new owner of Smutty (which at this point might be the best case scenario for us beer fans), he'll very quickly learn what he needs to know about running a brewery, and will hire some experienced people to help him run the brewery and restaurant while he uses their expertise along with others to make bigger strategic decisions.

My friends and I discovered Smutty Shoals Pale Ale in the mid 90s at O'Hara's, an Irish pub in Newton that always had an adventurous beer list. (Long before Finest Kind, which I still love.) At that point in time I think it was as hoppy a brew as I'd ever had. We went through many pints of Shoals back then.

Got a 12er last week at Total Wine for $14. Best deal in town!

Sounds like the Smuttynose bid was awarded to Provident Bank for $8.25m. Who will try to turn it over to someone....
