BA recommends a serving temp of 40-45F for the Smuttynose Homunculus. This may be too cold.
I found that 50-55 may be the better temp. Waiting to hear back from Smuttynose about this.

The following is from the link next to the recommended serving temperature:

There are 3 storage temperatures used to lay beer down for maturation and/or storage. Not only will you want store your beers at these specific temperatures, but also you'll want to serve them at the same. Your strong beers (like barleywines, tripels, dark ales) will be their happiest at room temperature (55-60F), most of your standard ales (like bitters, IPAs, dobbelbocks, lambics, stouts, etc) will be at cellar temperature (50-55F) and your lighter beers (like lagers, pilsners, wheat beers, milds, etc) will be at a refrigerated temperature (45-50F). Usually the higher alcohol, the higher temperature and lower alcohol, the lower temperature ... you get the point.

It obviously has close to 10% abv, so it would be better in the range you stated or even a little higher. I'm pretty sure it just lists the 40-45F because of the style it is listed under.

The pairing, serving, storing suggestions on the sidebar are generic by style, and aren't specifically tailored to each beer.

I agree. BA should change the serving temp. This beer is quite enjoyable at higher temps. Regardless,
ABV can be a good rule of thumb for determining serving temps. The 9.37% is a indicator that a higher serving temp is preferable.

For what it's worth, I think some Belgian IPAs can have some unpleasant, medicinal tones when they're served too cold. Something about the hops and the phenolic yeast character not mixing well, I think, but it tends to smooth out and mellow as it warms a bit. I found this with both Homunculus and Le Freak, I believe, among others.

Absolutely. Homuculus is a different beer at 55F than at 45F. It's a general rule for a lot of beers- warmer and one enjoys the subtleties of the beer. However,
some IPAs can be served cooler. Or an IPL like Hoponius Union, can be served at 45F.
