I did a vertical last year that had a '97, then 2003 on. The '97 was flat and tasted like sherry/port from oxidation.

There was a big decrease in the oxidation when doing from 2007 to 2008 due to the better seal of the pry off cap.

I was just about to ask @Roguer how he felt about bitter sherry .

Just reading this thread with morning coffee. Kudos to all. This thread is a great illustration of where getting the right people in a discussion can help inform everyone participating.

Great find of old goodness, I was under the impression that Florida limited the ABV in beer for a time and it didn't matter if it was a Lite or a Bigfoot the state kept it all low.

As late as the 1970s (don't know if or when it ended) there were many so-called "dry counties" in Florida - esp. the northern panhandle region- where only "under 3.2 abw" beer was sold. I strongly doubt that Sierra Nevada ever would have brewed a 3.2 abw version of Bigfoot Barley Wine style Ale for such regions.

There are actually some people who think the switch to pry-offs ruined Bigfoot verticals, since so many thought it developed so slowly anyway even with twist-offs.

If anyone is still interested...tonight I cracked open this mystery Bigfoot (most likely 1993 as best any could figure, above, although it's possibly as "young" as a 1994). At the indulgence of the BeerAdvocate community, I'd like to share my impressions.

It's obviously quite flat. There are some bubbles around the edge of the glass, but those did not last long. The brew is darker than I recall any Bigfoot.

I'm glad so many people chimed in this thread with "Boozy Port/Sherry!" because it definitely hits those notes. Wine-like aroma, and absolutely no hint of unpleasant oxidation. (Maybe those twist-off caps were good!)

But the most important question, of course, is: "How does it taste?"

In short, it's .... well, it's excellent. Lots of caramel up front, slightly burnt. A little bit of an alcohol punch in the middle, definitely like a thick wine. Finish carries tons of chocolate on the back-end; some lingering prunes, chocolate, and caramel for the aftertaste. Pretty much no hop bitterness.

So, I can confirm that you can age a Bigfoot for more than 20 years, even if constantly exposed to light and unreasonable heat (remember: South Florida, on a kitchen counter, for pretty much that entire time), and it's still good! Not just drinkable, but actually enjoyable.

Cheers all; I hope you enjoyed this little exploration of mine, and thanks for following along! :grinning:

Thanks for giving it a go, @Roguer When you first posted this I was really curious to find out if it was going to be a complete mess after all that time. Glad to hear that it was good.

My dad's not a craft beer drinker - at all. But he likes weird beer names and bottles. Back when he bought it, he'd never heard of it, but it sounded cool, and the dude at the store said it was the most potent beer he had.

So he bought it, and put it with the rest of his collection of funny, odd, cool things.

...and then I drank it.

If anyone out there is hanging onto any '08, I'm really trying to fill the hole in my '07-'15 vertical. I'd be more than happy to work out something if you'd part with any!!!
