SO i was on the SN website and along with the year round offering, I saw something called old chico brand. They look like some tasty beers. Does anyone know about this? is it year round in only CA? http://www.sierranevada.com/beer/specialty/old-chico
It's available only in Chico to my knowledge. I didn't realize there were different beers in the line up though which is cool. I had the crystal wheat a few years ago and thought it was pretty terrible. Meant for the college kids I guess?
SN has brewed this just for locals forever. Although I think they may start wider distro on this. I'm sure @sierranevadabill could confirm either way.
I think I asked either SN bill or SN's customer service last year sometime if it's available outside of Chico. I was told no, but you never know what the future may hold. I liked that wheat beer back in college and that was the one I was inquiring about.
Crystal Wheat is by far the weakest in my opinion. The distro is a little outside Chico, believe it is currently Butte County. The Brown Ale is really good, better than Tumbler I believe, Pale Bock is a great spring beer and ESB was part of my summer rotation.
The Old Chico brands are only available in NorCal near Chico (also in Mills River, NC). These beers are designed to be a "thank you" to our loyal local fans. The styles are versions of draught-only beers that have an extremely loyal following in the area. We do Crystal Wheat year-round, and three seasonal a under the Old Chico banner. Most of these beers were made for years as specialties that got very popular in local bars in the Chico area. As such, we'll pick the most popular styles and work them into the seasonal rotation. The artwork in the labels depicts the Old Chico brewery which once operated in downtown Chico. Coincidentally the building that once housed that brewery later held a bicycle shop where Ken first worked when he moved to the area. Bill
Thanks for the info Bill, I grabbed a bottle of Crystal Wheat when I was in San Francisco visiting and really enjoyed it. thanks for the explanation.
