I know that Snallygaster 2018 is approximately 2 months away, but I didn't see a thread yet dedicated to it. I figured this thread could be used to post updates of breweries, beers, etc.

I have been to several beerfests in the past including GABF '13, EBF '15/'16, and Huna Day '16, but this will be my first Snallygaster, which just so happens to be on my 37th birthday. I also wanted to see what others have thought of it in the past or compared to any of the beerfests I listed? I have the VIP tickets and was curious how early to get in line if the gates open at 12:00 noon? I'm trying to avoid what happened at Huna Day where we got in line like 30 minutes before the gates opened due to standstill traffic, and had to wait over an hour to get in and there were a lot of beers kicked already. I realize that Huna Day probably has double or more of the amount of attendees that Snallygaster has, but I still didn't want to risk missing out on some of the rarer beers if I could help it. I've read threads about Snallygaster in past and people talking about how the ticketing system sucks and how much the beers will cost, but I know that and I'm okay with it.

The beer list hasn't been announced yet, but here is the list of breweries in attendance.

I've been to several Snallygasters before and last year, at least from an organizational perspective, was by far the best one (it was SO HOT though, but that's not anyone's fault). One thing to note: they sell A LOT of the VIP tickets, so many that by the time I got in line last year around 11:30, the line was already down the street and around the corner. Entry moved pretty quickly though, and it didn't take more than 10 minutes to get in once they opened the doors.

Last year was also the first time I'd been where there weren't like 3-5 must-have beers and a big drop off in quality from there, so there were a lot of great beers available all day long (Hill Farmstead, Suarez Family, Other Half, etc.) simply because of how deep the lineup of beer was. A few of the big stouts and whatnot kicked early, but it was a pretty different experience from past years when a few things kicked within minutes and the rest of the lineup was underwhelming. This year looks like it's likely to be the same.

Has Snallygaster ever sold out before? Wondering about the need to buy tickets before seeing a weather forecast. Does anyone know the reason behind the move to a different venue?

I think they usually/always sell out the VIP.

You shouldn’t go if you don’t get VIP tickets, IMO.

I haven't gone to Snally in a few years, but one of the things that left a bad taste in my mouth the last time I went was that, when the clock struck opening time for VIP attendees, everyone queued up just scattered in the direction of their highest priority brew. There was no gateway or anything people had to pass through (after going through pre-opening security/ticketing) before grabbing a beer, so the people who got there right before opening had at least as good of a shot at the rarest stuff as the people who had been waiting for hours. Are you guys saying they've fixed that?

I dunno. I see so many good breweries on that list that I can't imagine them running out of good beer in the first 90 mins, or whatever head start the VIP has.

This year’s brewery list looks deeper than past years, so it’s hard to tell.

Last time I went (a few years ago), they ran out of a shockingly large number of beers by around the 3:00-3:30 hour mark (including the 90 min VIP). We ended up spending a bunch of tickets on food since none of the remaining beers looked even remotely appealing. I felt sorry for the GA people who were just arriving at that point.

This was not the case last year. We rolled up around 230p and everything I wanted was still pouring. There was no line for several of them. What you describe used to be the case, however.

Thank you for your input. That really doesn’t sound too bad to be honest. I was just thinking back to how bad the line was at Huna Day and didn’t want to risk that shit again. The line there was like 4 or 5 city blocks. I got in line for FO and they said it kicked in the first 15 minutes. The same happened with BA Coconut Cake. It was hot as fuck as well and didn’t even think to put on sunblock and got burnt as fuck and I’m not someone who easily burns. I agree the lineup looks pretty amazing. I was at local brewfests before that had one or two heavy hitters and the rest were absolute shit. Thanks again.

    Sounds
That’s really good to hear. They’ve been absurdly slow on revealing the beers the breweries are bringing but I saw that they’re going to have BA Abraxas and Maman, which I would think would kick pretty quickly, but hopefully that’s not the case.

This will be my fourth Snallygaster. The gate control has definitely gotten better. We'll have to see how well the organizers adjust to the new downtown location with a different set of logistics this year. There will be more information (beer list and booth locations) and maps released during the week before to help plan your day. Personally, I'll probably aim for getting in line around 11:30. I have found the phone app useful in the past (new app provider this year). DC Beer and Bright Young Things usually post suggested checklists that I have found helpful.

Untappd already has 128 beers posted for the event but not sure of the source.

Full beer list posted on the website. Had my fingers crossed for some TG stouts but overall still looks pretty solid.

Circling back to the question I posted earlier, which I don't think anyone answered: did they do anything to fix the "stampede at opening" issue from a few years ago?

I don't think there's an explicit answer to your question but a few people have given enough information in this thread that you could probably parse together a reponse.

The Snally Twitter account said they would have Maman via their 9/14 tweet. Just checked, and that post is still up, but their beer list cautions it's subject to change without notice. I'm guessing it won't be there next Saturday.
