After taking my wife to the airport this morning for three days of work in Boston, I decided to take a little day trip over to Central Washington today with my 17-month old daughter and my late-50's parents.

Anyways, our first stop after three hours in the car was lunch and beers at Snipes Mountain. I had mentioned on Untappd that I was planning on going there, but after checking my first beer (Apple Tart saison) in, the head brewer came out to the outside patio and chatted my parents and I up while we waited for our food and my daughter burned off energy running around like a madman. I got the strong impression from both the wait staff and the brewers that NO ONE comes to Sunnyside to drink their beers. That's why they send all the good stuff directly to Seattle.

Once our food came out, he told us to come back to the brewery and say hi before we left. After getting the tour and being shown their small but impressive barrel program, I got to help with their IPA for the day, and was even given a gift to take home.

Bale Breaker was incredibly impressive, the Beer Shoppe was fun and the Iron Horse Micropub was nostalgiac for me since it was a D&M Coffee Stand when I was going to graduate school, but Snipes Mountain wins. $2.50 pints, $7 growler fills, great food and incredibly personal interaction with the staff. Kudos guys, and thanks for a great afternoon. If you ever find yourself passing Sunnyside on I-82, take the five mile detour and stop in. The Brewer's Burger rocks.

Great little story, I'll check out Snipes if I ever have reason to go to Sunnyside.

Somewhat on topic, maybe you can settle a question for beertunes and me. Is Apple Tart the same beer as Apple Pi? I sent Snipes an email after Terry asked me about this a few days ago (I created the Apple Pi profile on BA after trying a glass at Chuck's on Father's Day), but I haven't yet heard back from the brewery. They're probably too busy talking to their customers to reply to an email.

I've only had their porter and thought it was solid. I've only seen bottles at one store (Bottles, actually) and they haven't been on tap anywhere I've seen here in Spokane. Too busy kissing Seattle pooper to bother with the east side of the state I suppose.

I was at a Snipes night at Beveridge Place Pub last year and had a great interaction with Chad there. Had several barrel-aged sours that night, which I really enjoyed.

Also saw Chad having a great time at Belgianfest this year.

    Yes, I like Snipes.

Yes, same beer. Apple Pi was the intended name for the beer when the concept was a 3.14% apple saison. Chad bumped up this batch to 5.5% or so and released it as Apple Tart. I think Chuck's keg was called Apple Pi informally and that was what went up on the display.

I first became aware of Snipes when Tony Savoy left Skagit River to become the brewer over there. He did a great job, the beers were super tasty, we could get sixers of some of the beers up here in the 'Ham, and kegs would show up every so often. Tony left to open Flyers (where he continues to do a fine job) and we didn't as much of their beer around for a while. Eventually Chris Miller took the reins and did great too. He expanded the beers, helped get them wider recognition and distro, and made some small batch/one-offs. He got to fulfill his dream of opening his own brewery (Berryessa, in Winters, CA) where I'm sure the beers are very tasty. Now Chad (apologies for not knowing his last name) has taken over, and he's doing great as well. Making the standard beers that have been brewed throughout all of this, and now widening out into new, for the brewery, styles.

All that leads to the fact that, for the vast majority of the time, the beers have consistently tasty, reasonably priced, and generally available. The fact that this brewery can go through all these changes, and suffer any long term damage to quality and reputation speaks highly of ownership. I don't know if ownership is very hands on, or hands off, but either way they get a good product out at a good price. I think they're one of Washington's "hidden secret" breweries, and deserve more attention than they get. So, yes, I appreciate Snipes, and wish them much continued success going forward.

You send us some Selkirk Abbey, and we'll send you some Snipes. That's fair, right?

Brix in Ellensburg has Selkirk on tap. Only 100 miles from Seattle!

Ellensburg seems like the other side of the world to Seattlites.

I used to live there, so to me, and in reality, it's not.

Really like the Little Chief IPA. Wish more breweries could make an IPA with that much hoppy goodness and flavor, yet keep the abv. under 4%.

I was just there yesterday late afternoon. Up for work and detoured around 97 just to hit Snipes. Generally happy with beers. Far better than Atomic, where I ate dinner in Richland. Hitting the rest of Richland breweries tonight.

The beer is decent, but the BBQ is awesome at Shrub Steppe. Recommended.

It used to be bottled. Snipes hasn't been distributed to Spokane for years, and I haven't been looking recently, but next time I'm down in the Tri-Cities visitng family I'll look for it.

Snipes isn't bottling right now and probably won't be for the foreseeable future.
