soaking wood chips in a medium vs adding the medium straight into your fermentor?

    in today's chapter of "trying to logically work through this":

    is there any difference between soaking wood chips/cubes in a medium (like wine, bourbon, etc) and adding the chips to your fermentor versus adding plain chips and then a few ounces of the medium to the fermentor?

    shouldn't that be the exact same?
