Hey guys, my bday is on saturday and me and my buddy would like to grab a pint somewhere decent. I live in West Side LA, so I guess FW Propagator is an option since they have outdoors seating.

Any ideas of any places not too far? Im happy to go to Glendale, Torrence if something's worth the hike. Any bars with good taplists or brewery suggestions welcome. Cheers!

Beachwood BBQ in Long Beach has a large outdoor area, if that's not too far of a hike. They do require a food purchase, but I think pretty much everyone does now.

Tony's Darts Away in Burbank - they always have a decent tap list and really good food. Several tables outside for outdoor seating.

FW Propagator is a great choice imo, I'm a fan of FW beer in general but the food there is pretty good too.

This has flooded social media the last day it so. Even had a write up in the LA Times. Maybe it can save a few of the locals.

I got a rock in my beans, I told the waitress politely and she said

    "It's a restaurant, things happen."

    Never going back.

Oof, sorry that happened to you. Don't blame you one bit for that kind of experience.

I get that this bummed you out and it is your choice whether or not to return. With that said, as a restaurant operator, I would find it helpful if you sent an e-mail and described the incident. Mainly so I could educate the server on their mistake, but also so I could have a chance to get you back in the doors. I would hate to lose a customer over a server who is either having a bad day or is just bad at their job...

For the record, I eat a lot of beans (burritos) and have encountered rocks many times. It is a hard one to catch at the restaurant level.

    Cheers!

This for sure. Sorting beans for pebbles isn't a 100% game. I would hedge toward not punishing an entire business for the behavior of one staff member unless that staff member was the owner, but that is certainly up to each individual consumer.

I completely agree. And ironically, only time I’ve had something similar happen to me was at KRBC. But it was a kalamata olive pit in a wrap. Ouch! I didn’t get pissed, I know shit happens. Staff was beyond cool and comp’d me a growler fill. This was probably a decade ago.

I have never encountered a rock in my food before; I would think even if they are hard to catch, it must be high priority since one could chip a tooth. I don't have insurance right now either.

It was my birthday, and it kind of rotted the mood out. I will get their beer as I normally would, but now I doubt I will have the desire to return to a place that has a tarnished memory associated with it. So be it.

Do you ever buy beans in bulk... As in loose, dry beans? If so, you'd know that rocks occasionally get in there. Like KRBCEric said, email the manager or something but to throw off the entire food staff...I don't know. Don't get me wrong the waitress's response was rude but still...

Does this lend further credence to your not wanting beer served with food?

Where did I 'throw off' the whole food staff?

I said the waitress was rude, I had a bad experience, and I'm likely never going back since now I have a rotten memory of my time there.

Bretta Blanc was really good, and Welcome LA is a tasty Westy though.

My mistake... I'll be more specific

*Throw off an entire food establishment which includes all of the people who work there because of one rude waitress

As someone who deals with these sorts of things somewhat frequently; I understand your desire to not go back, and that is perfectly fine. While I don't like getting complaint e-mails, I do find them useful. Sometimes there are things I can do to try and prevent further issues.

In the case of the rock (and the olive pit), there is almost nothing to do to prevent those from occurring again - it is neither feasible nor desirable to have servers root through every piece of your food to ensure the manufacturer provided the quality of food they are supposed to - however, I could certainly address the server behavior should I be inclined.

Anyway, everyone is allowed to choose how they spend their time and money, but when you are literally serving thousands of meals, you are going to have an issue here and there. Personally, I appreciate constructive complaints from customers.

Feel the need to chime in that as I've a 10+ year vegetarian who eats a crap-ton of beans, I can't recall a single time I've chomped down on a rock in my beans. I get suggesting he not dismiss the entire spot for one waitress' behavior, but planting a flag on the "you should expect the occasional rock in your beans" is a really weird stance for me.

Should we change the name of this site to BeanAdvocate?

I don't think anyone said to expect it, just that the possibility certainly exists. Beans are sorted for a reason (more often to get rid of bad ones, but rocks are definitely a part of the equation). Are you saying you've never even seen fragments in dry beans during soaking or prior to cooking them? If so, good on you, that's a pretty solid run.
