I was speaking with some guys that work at Societe and got on the topic of when they might bottle. I was told that they will be bottling their Belguim beers in about a year and will quote "never" bottle any of their IPA's. They told me the reason was due to freshness. What does everyone think of that?

I think I'll never stumble upon one of their beers in a bottle store..and when I see their tap handle..I won't know what's in store for me if I ask the beer guy to pour some from it. Maybe someone will tell me it's good..or maybe I'll never know.

I'm sure they make enough money charging $25 for an empty growler, that they don't need to bottle. That said...they do make some enlightening IPAs.

This isn't all that uncommon. I'm pretty sure Hill Farmstead has stated they won't bottle hoppy beers (could be wrong on this, but they seem to be very particular on freshness), and Kane does the same thing (only draft and growlers of hoppy beers). I think it's a reasonable policy, unless of course you can secure expedient distribution like what Stone has done w/ Enjoy By. Brewers want their product to be tasted as intended, and if they feel it won't be representative of the quality they want to portray then they are completely within their rights to keep it draft only.

I wonder if there will be breweries that currently bottle their IPA's that might change course and stop bottling?

The Pupil was my favorite beer I had all of last year. Trading for growlers Cali to Florida is a drag. Bummer.

Never say "never". There are plenty of breweries that bottle or can IPA's and do just fine. If they can brew and sell enough to need to bottle, I think they'd be happy. I wouldn't take something said in casual conversation as written in stone.

    cans.

also, sounds fine to me. keep the beer fresh. also, do whatever you want with it. so much good beer around, it doesn't make a difference. good for them that they only want their hoppy beers experienced in their best form.

The whole freshness thing could be "easily" solved if/when beer starts being treated the same as fresh meat/produce, but I doubt that will happen soon.
I agree in "Never say Never"
    That's just pessimistic talk :stuck_out_tongue:

Cans are prone to temperature fluctuation much more quickly than bottles, but I agree in a well-preserved can vs. bottle, the can will retain more flavor.

Freshness rant. I emailed two breweries stating I have seen way to many out dated IPAs and guess what in the last two months fresh beers have been flowing. Not naming names, but Firestone and Green Flash really have impressed me with customer satisfaction. Thx appreciating paying to much money for an out dated beer. If a beer is awesome people will buy it!

You can keep growlers just as long as you can keep a bottle, and with growlers you may even see more of a decline in carbonation and freshness. So I'm not sure what they're preventing here. If they really wanted to ensure freshness they'd eliminate growlers and distribution entirely of their IPAs. Until you do that, there is not complete control.

Best thing you can do is provide bottled on dates combined with drink by dates.

As a person who works a mile away from the brewery, it's not a huge deal for me, but it's ridiculous. Just bottle/distribute a limited amount.

And the growler price is outrageous, I bought it of course, the stainless steel ones are amazing.
