WestCoaster just posted on the bookoffaces that Societe is finally doing cans!! Great news for WCIPA lovers.
I expected big things from Societe when I first tried their stuff in 2014 or so. In my opinion, talk about a brewery that stayed stagnant - while around the same time Modern Times came out, they have taken off.
Not sure of their distro plans, but I'd pick up a fresh 4pk if I saw it. It'd have to be pretty damn good and fresh to make me go back for more or on the regs, though. I'm getting my fresh west coast fix largely from Highland Park and Beachwood. Hard to get imagine this coming from SD is going to be fresher.
I haven’t had The Pupil in years. Used to drive from OC to Alpine every couple months and I’d always stop by Societe on my way back for growler fills. For those of you that have had it recently, what is the general consensus on the current version of The Pupil? As good as ever? Or is it another “not as good as it used to be”?
Pupil hasn’t really blown me away in the times I’ve had it this year on draft at restaurants and at the taproom. I would still definitely give cans a try since Societe’s track record is still pretty good in my eyes.
It's definitely been different lately. I would previously count it as one of my favorite IPA's. But lately it's been malty af
It still is for me. The Pupil is just the start. I'll certainly be consuming more Societe beer in the future.
Societe is a brewery that never really blew me away. Solid beers, nothing great. Never understood some of the undying love and praise they receive.
Pupil was great for the first couple years, but at some point it changed beyond recognition and never returned to the same beer.
They nail every style they brew and all of their beers are among the best in town. What more do you want?
I think their Belgian styles are some of their best and also love the Butcher. Does anyone know if they've ever released a BA version of that?
Well I disagree with both of those points...so that might answer your question. To be clear, I didn’t say they were bad. They’re just not elite.
BA Butcher existed at the FWIBF this year and was at least on draft (uncertain if togo was available) at the end of July.
They were one of the top dogs in San Diego and LA area when they first came out. Stayed that way for several years. I would drive by and fill my growler after every visit to ABC. Their kegs would always show up at BT's BBQ in HB when nobody else in LA/OC would get them. I would always stop in for a glass at BT's. Their kegs still show up at BT's occasionally. Cans are welcomed in my fridge if I come across any. Cheers.
