so my local SMALL town bottle shop has bottled of 2012 Sofie- is that a big deal, or is normal to see these around? I think like $5 too.
I'd buy all they have. Sofie is delicious and the Brett really starts to shine after a year or so. It's a cellar staple for me.
Yeah fairly common to see that and Matilda in old bottles...people think they are a bust and don't buy them but its one of my favorite beers had a 2013 the other week. Buy them up for sure.
Like previously stated not that uncommon but I would still pick them up if I were you. Great brew that gets better with age. I have some in my cellar actually probably as far back as 2011.
I agree with all the above posts. I think you should definitely buy it. Sofie is great with a year + on it. And it's not really common to see Sofie quite that old here and never for $5!
just had a sofie with a little over a year on it for Thanksgiving and its great. It's hard to say if I prefer it fresh or aged because its totally different. both delicious though.
Sofie '15 was my Thanksgiving beer this year, and it was a huge hit with the guests. Paired wonderfully with the food, too.
WHOA WHOA WHOA, hold your horses everyone!! If this was sitting on the shelf, room-temperature, in bright fluorescent light for 3 years, don't bother!! $5 is not a lot of money, but I'll bet $10 it will not be the aged masterpieces people are proclaiming it will be. Doesn't matter if we're talking bomber or 4-pack, it will probably be skunked and oxidized, and not worth it per ounce over a normally-priced but fresher 6-pack sitting next to it. If you know they took care of it, stored it cool in the dark upright for three years, then hell yeah, snatch that stuff up.
Suggestion, buy one and take it home, chill it, drink it, determine if you like it. If so go back and get the rest as that is a pretty good deal.
If it's a 750ml the bottles are black....I've never had an even slightly skunked Sofie ever and I buy them from the shelves sitting under lights... But yes op always good to try one first and make sure you do like them....but honestly at 5 bucks who's cares.. Actually yeah keep telling people this more for me
I agree up to a point. Buying "aged" beer from the shelf is always a gamble. However, the Brett in Sofie will scavenge all of the oxygen left in the bottle making it more stable over time. The light thing is a small concern buy I really do believe the potential benefits outweigh the potential downside in this case. I found Sofie to be sparkling and very fruity when fresh and Brett forward with the right amount of funk with 1 year on it. That was under my cellar conditions so it does become a gamble with the shelf beer. I don't believe they mentioned what volume the bottle was. Either way, my opinion still stands: buy them for the experience.
Well, this all settles it. Will pick one up, and drink it promptly- will then decide whether or not I need to buy the others! Thanks everyone for the great discussion. We don't get a ton of Goose out here on the Oregon Coast so I'm not very well versed. Will report pack post tasting!
You will likely want to buy the rest. I had a similar experience this past summer at my local grocery store. They marked down the 2012 22oz bottles to like $4.91. I only bought one. Mistake. Sofie with time on it turns into a lightly funky, moderately tart, champagne-like beer that was simply delicious. I bought some 2015 bottles to age, but the real problem is that I can't not drink them now!
