I had not had this in about a year or so, but my god is it good. I feel bad for those who cannot get it.

the question is, is there a better single stout out there on the market? Not barrel aged, not spiked with vanilla bean, not mixed with coffee.

Obsidian is distinctive and a great stout. One that i also remember being memorable was Founders Grand Rapids Stout on tap at their brewery....which was my first craft nitro brew. I must have had at least 5 while visiting my friend there.

'Better' would be a relative term, but if I couldn't find an obsidian stout, I'd be perfectly content with a SN stout.

Add a scoop of good vanilla ice cream....you'll thank me later.

Obsidian is so delicious, but Deschutes doesn't distro here, so we brew a clone of it so we can have it always, and it too is just sooooo good. Funny how it is simple and delicious to drink, but complex to brew.

Great beer. Its the only beer I consistently buy by the case.

I can't get it here on the East Coast, but when I did have it when I visited friend in SF. I have to say, I completely agree. There is no better single, non-adjunct stout that I have ever had. I so dearly wish that we got it here.

We recently got Deschutes across the border in Mizzou (Last summer). To be honest, it doesn't wow me much like it used to. I remember it being much more malty with more depth of flavor.

A local place just put it on, on nitro. So incredibly drinkable.

If it was on distro here I'd drink it and Black Butte Porter every single day. Avery Out-of-Bounds is a decent substitute for a fridge-filling stout that I can actually get, but it's not the same as Obsidian.

I got a 6er in a trade and it blew me away! It became my Highest rated 'regular' stout.

Velvet Merlin is a fantastic beer, but it's an oatmeal stout that focuses on body where Obsidian is an American stout that focuses on nose and roast. They are way different beers for different moods.

Also, FWIW Obisidan is rated significantly higher.

Who brews this clone? And where can I snag some?

I hope you know that I know that we both know. Oatmeal isn't exactly bourbon, vanilla, or coffee, and IMO Osidian could use a few more oats if you know what I mean.

IKYKWBK, but I'm not sure everyone reading your post knows what we know some people know we know.

For the record, I think both Velvet Merlin and Obsidian need zero tweaking. They are both beautiful and deserve to be loved just the way they are.

Another Oatmeal Stout, and at $6 a bomber I'd much rather buy the six pack of Obsidian on most days.

But, if money ain't a thing, I'd rather drink a Shakespeare Stout.

When I took a trip to the west coast last year, Obsidian Stout and Black Butte Porter were actually two beers that impressed me the most out of what I had. They sell the six packs for ridiculously cheap too. I had Velvet Merlin as well, and was impressed by that.
