So today I was at the liquor store and found something on the shelf which I somehow didn't notice before: some 2011 vintage Old Stock ale. I knew it was a highly reviewed beer, but (unless I misread the price label) it was like 18 bucks for a four pack (yikes!), so I was hesitant to buy.

I'm seeking the council of the wise beer sages on this site, as I don't want to spend almost 20 bucks on something I won't like or that might not have held up. Should I put down the money for a four pack next time? I've never tried an old ale before, but I DO enjoy many different styles and LOVE some pretty bold beers, such as Bigfoot and Arctic Devil.

There's also the question of how it's been stored. I assume it's been kept for the last two years the same the way I found it, out in the open on the (refrigerated) shelf. Is light exposure a concern?

    Any advice?

I'd pay that much for a 2011 4pk if I didn't already have some. One of the best, IMO, especially given the availability and the price.

Love Old Stock, both fresh & aged.

If I hadn't been spending so much on beer lately, I'd grab it.

Cool. Sounds like it would be a very good idea to go back and pick up a four pack... very soon, haha. Thanks for the responses, guys! And thanks for the great picture, Greywulfken. Looks good!

Yeah, I was excited enough to find Old Stock there (nowhere else here has it), but the 2011 vintage REALLY caught my eye. First time I've ever found a very age-able beer on the shelf that's already been aged longer than a few months.

Id say its a little on the high side for price but it is one of my favorite beers to age. Personally I think the 2011 is the least best out of the past 4 years but still very, very good. Just not as good as 09, 10, and 12. If you have never had it, go for it. Also, find some 2012 and 2013 and try those and set a couple aside for a few years from now. The 2009 is freakin delicious right now. Because of this thread, I will be drinking one of these when I get off of work tonight!

Edit: I'm probably biased on the price because I live about 3 hours from the brewery. I get it for about $12 a four pack.

Pretty sure we still have 2011 on shelves around here and I would not hesitate to buy them if I didn't have a few already. There aren't too many other Old Ales that are going to be better(IMO), so I say go for it.

I just cracked the first of my 2012 Old Stock. It tastes sort of thin. Maybe it's just the fig coming through in some strange way. I hope it's better after 2 years of age.

2011 is still pretty young. you should certainly buy it, and plan on drinking one now, but consider the others an investment and put them away. Drink one per year for the next 3 years. You'll see. This is one of the finest aging beers out there.

You seem to know your Old Stock. Quick question: I found a bottle of 2000 Old Stock in the cellar of my store the other day. Any chance it's still good?

I love some bold beers myself, but I have not been able to get into old ales. I got Old Stock last year some time and drank half of my first bottle before I gave the other 3 away (along with the second half to a buddy I was with at the time). I had one friend who liked it, but the rest of us were not big fans. If you have never tried an old ale before then I would try something less expensive first to see if you even enjoy the style at all. This is a pretty good representation of the style at a good price if you can find it. Try this (or something similar that you can get), and then decide on an $18 4 pack. There is definitely a chance that its still good. But as with any beer that old, there's definitely a chance that its not good! It really just depends on how its been stored during this time. If it were me, I'd buy it, unless it was like $50 or something rediculous. I'd easily pay $20 -$25 though. How much are they asking for it if you dont mind me asking? Just as a reference, North Coast was selling verticals for a crazy amount, something like $500. Too much IMO

Great beer, I'd do it. $18 isn't too bad. It's only like $8.50 a 22oz or so (don't feel like doing the actual math).
