    Hey...

Anyone else get a bad can of Surly Furious? I'm at a bar and a friend ordered a Furious. It was really bad so he asked for another. It was equally bad and the bartender agreed. We opened a third can, all dated 1/28/15 and it too was awful so they pulled everything with that date code.

Really? I sure as hell hope not. Isn't this beer a little young to show signs of infection?

Bad or infected? Flat? Off-tastes? Diacetyl? What are you saying exactly?

If you're going to start a thread like this you ought to be a lot more specific than "bad".

What do you want? I'm not a certified Beer a Judge. What do you want me to say? Undrinkable? It was certainly sour and a little flat. I don't drink Furious very often, though ao like the beer,. The friend who drinks Furious most of the time states that "it wasn't' malty and the hop taste was wrong." Hardly a detailed analysis from an expert beer taster, but that's the best we can do.

    Hardly "infected" by that description.

You're right. Infected is probably incorrect. I shouldn't have used that term. Regardless, limited evidence suggests something wrong with the the Furious canned on that date. My original question stands. Has anyone else recently come across a can of Furious that was off? If so, was the can dated 1/28/15?

I think people are just trying to understand if this is the same issue as we are having with Abrasive.

Infectious sounds like a natural name variation of Furious. Y'know, 'cuz the enthusiasm for Surly's beer is infectious. :grinning:

I sure hope Sporty's wasn't serving up bad furious!

To actually contribute, however, I did have a can of 1/21 furious yesterday and that batch was tasty!

And there were cans of furious at Sporty's from an earlier date that were fine. Just the 1/28/15 ones were skunky.

SM stated: "It was certainly sour and a little flat." Admittedly, infections can frequently lead to over carbonation, but it also can lead to undercarbonation, as well. The 2009 Abyss is a prime example of this. But the unintentional sour or tart flavors are almost always from infection.

Also, I never heard anybody else complain about infected Bender, but there was definitely an infected keg at Hopkins Tavern/Pub 819 just before the new opening. It had some serious tart cherry going on. I mentioned it to the two bartenders, but they both looked at me like they had no idea what I was talking about. I googled and searched threads here to see if anybody else had been reporting it in other kegs, but didn't see any other mention of it. This was late November/early December.

Are we sure these aren't just brett sour versions

If labeled that way they could charge at least a couple extra bucks per six pack..

I would think an in house quality assurance department would catch this? I work for a major food packaging company and this sort of thing is tested hourly. Tsk tsk

How? Please explain, I've never heard of such a problem. It would seem to defy Henry's law.

Don't know how it could do that for a force carbonated beer. But I've seen infections where the infection caused the yeast to go dormant and just not make as much carbonation. That only applies to bottle conditioning though.

Not sure why you parsed out the answer to your own question from my original quote: "The 2009 Abyss is a prime example of this."
