Sometimes I agree with the hype, sometimes I don't.

Disclaimer for sensitive people: the below is my opinion of 2 seriously high rated beers. If you disagree - OK!

I opened BA rated #2 and #3 last night, W12 and CBS.

I have to say CBS is the best beer I have ever tasted in any style, I was totally blown away. Closely behind is KBS which I also had recently. I am new to these BA Stouts though so I know I have a lot left to discover. I spent the last 3 years drinking pretty much only IPAs and recently got into sours, Belgians, and stouts.

The Westvleteren 12 - I did not think it was anything special. It isn't that I don't like the style - I LOVE Rochefort 10 and many others and find it totally superior to the W12. I have some ABT12 and R10s left - as well as 4 more W12's so I am still going to do a little blind test with those 3. I just found W12 to be average. A great beer, sure, but the fact that it is so sought after and highly rated I don't understand when R10 is available everywhere for $7 a bottle. So far both Pliny the Younger and W12 I have found nowhere deserving of their standings here. What do they both have in common? Near zero availability. Interesting isn't it?

CBS on the other hand I felt was deserving of every bit of the hype. What a fantastic beer. I'd trade everything in my "cellar" ( aka china cabinet lower storage ) for that stuff.

Just sharing my experience, no flames needed if you think #1 and #2 deserve to be there. I can think of at least 10 IPA's that are superior to PtY. W12 - who knows - maybe I have a weird palate. I had water and white bread in between each tasting to palate cleanse. R10 is one of my top 10 beers, W12 wouldn't even make top 50. Maybe I'll change my mind next bottle. I know when I drank Heady Topper for the 1st time I thought it was OK. The next couple of times I fell in love with it. Then their are beers like Hopslam and PtE that I fell in love with instantly.

    Quick chill in the fridge:

Pictures for proof...never had the others but Roch 10 is fantastic. I buy a case about 4 times a year and ends up costing me under $6 a bottle. Roch 10 is what makes me ok with not having ever tried Westy 12...don't see how it can get much better.

R10 is definitely special. A lot of people tell me W12 tastes more like ABT12 - which I thought was just OK at best, not as good as R10. I haven't had ABT12 in awhile so I didn't make the connection but I have a bottle right now. It'll be interesting to taste the 3 side by side on an equal footing.

I will agree on Westy 12, there are a couple quads I prefer before it, mostly Pannepot.

I disagree on CBS, I was not impressed for the hype. It's a great beer no doubt but I can think of quite a few ba stouts I would gladly grab if the building was on fire before that one.

That's the great thing about taste buds. Cheers.

Looks like you had a good night, regardless. Yep, it totally stinks when you break a highly rated beer open and it doesn't meet your expectations, been there too. IMO, I think sometimes the hype on a particular beer ends up working against it, which is unfortunate. (Sometimes, but not always.) And sometimes it's just braggin' rights to say "had that one already", and then you know for next time.

List your #1, 2, and 3 non whale ones! The hunt is part of the fun!

I am going to Stone's Oakuinox next weekend - should be an eye opener. 15 3oz tasters with over 100 BA beers to choose.

WRT W12, there was some recent chatter about the Brick version having some issues during a certain brewing phase (believe Brabander also confirmed this with the abbey). Meaning, it may be worthwhile to try a regular offering of the beer to compare to R10, St B Abt, etc.

EDIT: Full disclosure - when fresh, I prefer R10. 6 mos to a year on W12? Often a different story.

I often think that the Law of Diminishing Returns affects these scores. Certain beers that we all have easy access to might not get the highest score since it might not be as exciting each time versus a beer being had for the first time, or one you may not be able to have again. People likely tend to savor and explore those more than they would a beer, they've had 50-60 times. My two cents.

Are you subscribed to the magazine? There was an article about how Westy 12 is overhyped in the 2nd to last issue.

As everyone will agree, not every beer in the Top 100 is top 100 worthy. The ratings are a collaborative effort and some beers get higher grades because of hype or recognition. My reviews are 100% no bullshit. If a beer isn't great, it isn't great.

So tuff to put beer in order. Here's a bunch in no particular order that I liked better.
    Black Tuesday
    KBS
    Parabola
    BCBS
    BCBCS
    BCBVS
    BA Speedway
Black Xantus (yes you read that right)
Probably some others I can't think of at the moment, just to give you an idea.

Bought it in store - anally ***** but I wanted to try it and had nothing that would trade for it. A week later I wound up with 8 Beat 5's, go figure.
