I explain that dirt isn't pejorative by any means somewhere in the clutter of posts above. Anyhow, I think I was possibly looking for a chain reaction and feeling feisty earlier. I certain got that reaction indeed.

I bought a 1/6 keg of Rodenbach Grand Cru which was the most expensive keg I have ever bought. Got it home and my wife asked while I was drinking it "What is that stinky smell?". I admit it was more vinaigrette than beer but I liked it. No I really did like it, I'm not saying that because of my wife not liking it and its cost!

Belgian Red is still available in the right WI market. Someone just grabbed me a bottle up by La Crosse.

I'm sure you can still find it but I'm too lazy to look that hard for a beer that's so easy to get normally could prolly still find it up north next time I go but I'm cool with waiting until it comes out again too. Nothing makes you appreciate something more than going without.

Any and all Crooked Stave beers, Boulevard's Lovechild 3 (if you can get a hold of it) Petrus Pale, New Belgium's La Folie...I could keep going but don't think anything else would potentially be available in PA...i'm originally from outside of Philadelphia...PA does get some Russian River stuff, all of their sours are fantastic!

Got to agree on the Cuvee des Jacobins, amazing beer for a great price (talking Aussie dollars for me). Ditto for the Petrus & Rodenbach - both using very ancient oak tuns to condition the beers (Petrus actually bought their conditioning barrels off Rodenbach).

On the contrary- I thought it led to an interesting and productive exchange, the best sort of thread drift we get here on BA..

No, it was one of the more intriguing and insightful threads I've read in a while. Wish there were more like this. You helped give me a better understanding of sour differences depending on geography.

Sour beers are for the most part because of price and aroma, very similar to wine when compared to most other beer styles. They are delicious, but I typically trade for them instead of buying them just cause they're so expensive. If you can find 3F or Cantillon in the U.S., be prepared to shell out a good amount. And if you order it from Europe, the shipping is a lot. The RR sours and others made in American also aren't cheap. They're smaller format bottles and they run around $18 when I found them in Philly.

They're worth it, but do your research to get good bottles cause you won't find many cheap sours.

To the OP, I'm in PA, so I'll give you some of what you might be able to find. Lots of stuff listed in here we can't get.

Russian River and The Bruery, they are expensive and hard to find, still some of the best and they are available if you really look hard enough.

Jolly Pumpkin. La Roja is a beer that is all over the place and is still a great sour beer. It's not cheap either, but it may be the best readily available year round sour found in PA. JP also has a few other sours/wilds that are good if you can find them.

Weyerbacher Riserva is all over the shelves right now and it's fantastic for a local sour. Again, a little pricey but you can get it and drink it.

Goose Island. Juliet is an awesome beer that we should be seeing this year since GI is now full force in PA. Great, great sour.

And finally, DFH Festina Peche is an awesome local Berlinner that is real tart and real drinkable and super easy to find. Drink it up during the summer months!

On a side note, I've had the New Glarus Belgian Red (traded for it since we can't get it here) and was not totally enamored with it. A good beer, but not something I would go out of my way to seek out. My opinion.

New Belgium La Folie isnt too . You could also look into some sour brown, and flanders red style brews. They tend to be less pricey and are similar in style. Also, if you have an Iphone or Android device, I suggest downloading the beer buddy app. This app allows you to scan bar codes on single bottles and will give you a brief description of the beer, style/overall score, and gives you other options that are top ranked in that style from other breweries. Use the app with beermenus.com and then you will know where to go to get the best beer in your area.

Available in PA via trade. I have traded at least 2 cases already since it came out.

Unintentionally ruining a thread about intentionally infected beers?
