So I just opened a recently bought DC Brau Penn Quarter Porter and it is completely sour. I've had many of these and I love them but this is definitely odd. I mean if I was expecting a sour I would have prepared my self but not when it is supposed to be a porter ya know. Anyone come across this issue with this beer. It's fully carbonated and there was no hint to the issue until tasting it. Just smelled it and it smells like a great porter. The glass is clean; hand washed. Drank from the bottle and sour too so not the glass.

This isn't stopping me from buying again but maybe I'll look to another shop, that maybe their shipment is tainted.

I have recently found a lot of porters, especially baltic can turn sour. No clue why. I have also expirenced the beer you speak of being sour as well. (Not always)

I just had the Whiskey Oak BA version last night and I picked up a slight tartness in the flavor.

This is my first encounter with a soured porter. I'll have to try more just to be sure no others have turned.

Was that a growler fill from the brewery? May have to make a trip up there for something like that.

*Edit - just noticed your from Cali. Where did you try this at? Tap then I'd assume?

No, it was a bottle someone brought to a tasting.

Nice, will have to try and get my hands on some of their BA versions. Besides a small tartness, was it a decent BA attempt?

I have had both variants and they had a light acidity in the finish but it wasn't a full on merlot grape or lactic tartness, it actually presented a dry profile and ended up complimenting what would have been a thin average porter.

Personally I would love it if dc brau got into sours. They could even use local va wine barrels

The beer from the bottle UCLABrewn84 is talking about tasted infected to me, though that was a good way into the tasting.

When they brought some kegs to MA over the summer I had a sample at a bar that was tart. Not very good. Wasn't sure if that was supposed to be intentional or not since it was a keg but I don't know how they were stored.

I've definitely picked up green apple in a few of their darker beers, especially the BA ones. I've not had it happen with PQP, but it's not exactly a rarity.

You should cut to the chase and contact Jeff and Brandon from DC Brau about this. They are really good at getting back to those with questions, comments or concerns. Just visit their website and if I'm not mistaken, they should have a contact link. I'm sure they'd want to know about any off products.

It was a bottle I received via mail. I'm guessing it was a quality control issue? Though I do have to say it tasted much better than the tart RIS from Stone earlier this year (again factor in that we were several bottles deep before tasting the Porter), cheers!

Thanks for all the info. Just bought another 2 bottles today, but from a different shop. Can't wait to crack them open.

This happened to me with a bottle of Cygnus X-1 Porter. The brewer told me it was due to an unintentional infection. Unfortunately mine had been sitting for a few years and it opened like a geyser, over a foot in the air.
