I've discovered a new style of beer that I love - sour stouts - but have no idea where to start or what to look for. The one I like a lot is categorized as an "Amerian Imperial," so it doesn't look like they're broken down into another subcategory.

Do y'all know of any sour stouts? I'm looking for anything.. easy-to-find, limited-release, cheap, expensive, etc.

    Thanks!

I need to start reviewing again. I've forgotten waaaay too many beers. I remember drinking at least a few (intentionally) sour stouts/porters but am at a loss trying to recall their information. Sorry.

I assume you're talking about this Madrugada Obscura from Jolly Pumpkin which is absolutely fantastic IMHO but the closest thing I have had to recent memory was an infected bottle of Central Waters Peruvian Morning:slight_frown: . I know it's weird but I actually drew some parallels between the two before giving the PM the horrible ole drain pour. Looked on google and it looks like Bells, blue point and Jester Kind Craft all offer sour stouts. Cheers.

edit: looks like m4ttj0nes beat me to it.

Tart of darkess was an experience to say the least... But as it has aged it has become great. I have one bottle sitting in the fridge waiting for the right night. I really want to try melange #1, a mix of b Tuesday and oude tart

I agree that Madrugada Obscura is very good, but I would recommend aging it for a while or trying to find an older bottle. I had one that was pretty fresh and while good, it wasn't very sour. Then I tried one that was a little over a year old, that was excellent.

Tart of Darkness is good, but a little too sour IMO. The sourness completely overpowers the traditional flavors of the stout.

Another that is worth a try is De Dolle Export Stout. Thought not advertised as a sour stout, it definitely has some sourness to it.

Out of curiosity, what is the "American Imperial" that you have had and liked?

Crooked Stave's Nightmare on Brett....is a sour baltic porter.

Wasn't my favorite from CS but others seemed to love it. I think it should be coming back out late this summer, might have to trade for it though. I imagine the second go of the beer will be better than the first one, too.
