Not a fan of the sour stout. By no means a drain pour but I like big sours and big stouts where stuff like Madugada Obscura just leaves me confused, wanting more sour or more stout.

I think it was 2011 but I thought New Belgiums LOF Clutch fit this catagory

I re-read the OP and couldn't tell whether there was an interest in unintentionally-soured Stouts?

A few months back I had a Buffalo Sweat on tap that fit the bill, and though it was just slightly-off it was enough for me to ask for a re-pour. Likewise, there's a lot of Redband out there which might be worth trading for. :sunglasses:

Flamboyant red ale 2011 vintage was money! Also funk metal, tart side of the moon and tart of darkness I would drink any day of the week!

I keep seeing Tart Side of The Moon pop up in this discussion. How is this a Sour Stout? Brewery Vivant calls it a Dark Farmhouse Ale (on the front of the can) and BA calls it an American Wild Ale. Ive had it many times (at the brewery and in cans) and would not consider it a stout at all.

I liked Lagunitas Sour Stout they brought to the FW fest.

It was like the opposite of Clutch: It tasted good and was sour.

I was surprised it took that long before somebody threw that one into the mix. I would recommend to the OP to try to trade for one. I have always thought of these as drain pours, but there is always one or two people who chime in saying that they loved this infected beer. Of course, there are also always a couple of people who chime in saying that they have never had bad 09 Abyss, so you would have no idea if it would be sour or not, until you opened it. But I bet that anybody still sitting on this batch would trade it for a song, because most people have hated the infected bottles. Worst case scenario is that you end up with a good bottle (one without infection) of one of the best imperial stouts made and probably get it on the cheap, as far as trade value.

The Old English Porter from New Glarus is another one that would be worth tracking down. I wasn't really big on the flavor profile when it was first released, but it fits right-in with the Sour Stout niche.

Discovered a new one this weekend - Naked Brewing The Gentleman...aged in apple brandy barrels with pineapple.

Not necessarily Stout, but nice Brown, I recommend O'dell's Meddler. It's great beer, fun to experience and you can find it at a lot of good shops.

If you're in Ohio/Ky/Tn/Indiana Rivertown's Old Sour Cherry Porter is a sour barrel aged imperial porter, that while not quite as good as funk metal IMO is up there with madrugada obscura

By "sure sure" I assume you mean not sure -- Aigre is french for sour. Aigre Plead the Fifth is good but less sour than some of the others mentioned such as Madrugada.

Update: When I had this at the brewery and in cans in March right after it was released it had a very noticeable tart cherry with Belgian taste with a dark red color. Just cracked my last can. Almost no sign of the original infection. Tart cherry is now a slightly sour cherry and much more like a stout. Tastes just like an aged Bell's Cherry Stout if anyone still has some cans.

I know the woman who runs West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago (Kristina, I think) is buds with the JK folks & she did sell their stuff when I was last there. Checking their website now & ...yep, they have JK there. No Funk Metal shown on the site. But you may want to call and ask. They dug up a Narke Kaggen for me from the back. Great place ...& the FM shows great promise ...just needs a little age on it.

For some reason breweries are having hard time consistently putting out dark sour beers. Deschutes for example hasn't been able to make sour stout for about 4 years now (last release was 2009).

There is one brewery though that used to be able to consistently put out dark sour beers - it's Oakshire. Unfortunately, their 2013 Hellshire didn't turn out to be sour though.

    ISO: Dark sours

Blue Mountain makes Sour Devil...IMHO, if its aged 6-9 months its pretty awesome. I'm a big fan of the combination aka infected stouts :grimacing:

Madrugada Oscura is brilliant. If you share a bottle with someone, you are missing the point. Drink this alone, or make sure to have a bottle for each person you are drinking with.

Start out cold. Let it warm up and evolve over the course of an hour or 2. Goes from roasty stout to funky sour mess (I mean that in a delicious way).
