Thanks, I'll certainly have to look into that!

I love Funk Metal. I just have one bottle left since EVERYONE I traded with while I was out and about were going absolutely freakin' mental for bottles of it, lol. Hopefully there'll be another batch soon (there's actually been 2 thus far).

Tart of Darkness is good, but Funk Metal is a lot more sour (which I prefer).

Props to the guy that mentioned Porto Gallito earlier in the thread. That's actually a sour imperial red (Double Red Rooster), however... that is (how I understand it) blended with Ananke as a base beer and then placed in barrels. It's actually my favorite Freetail sour to drink fresh (Ananke with a few years on it beats all). I imagine it'll be a VERY hot ticket next release.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I thought it was worth mentioning that I just found a fantastic new sour stout:
Prairie Artisan Ales - Wine Barrel Noir
    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30356/95382/?show_hads=Y

It has the prefect blend of roasted malts and sourness, and unlike the Madrugada Obscura, it doesn't need to age in the bottle for months for the sourness to develop (though it may continue to evolve over time).

I would definitely recommend it to any fan of sour stouts.

I'm a little late to this thread, but Russian River Proprietation is a great sour stout. I actually came up with the idea a couple of years ago, and when I was talking to Vinnie and Natalie in the brewhouse, who are both close personal friends of mine, they were really inspired by the idea. Fast forward and they put it into T25, then fast forward a year later and they're selling it at the brewpub. I suggested that he name it after me, but Vinnie declined. Haha, he's humble like that. But we are great friends, very close. I have lots of friends.

lagunitas does a very tasty sour stout - Sonoma County Stout. i fell it love w. it when i visited. i believe its only available on draft at the brewery w. no growler fills, unfortunately. BUT petaluma is beautiful this time of year.

Tart Side of the Moon by brewery vivant would be a distant #2.

I got a bottle of Madrugada Obscura the other day, it was bottled on Jan. 15th of this year. Any suggestions on when I should give it a try? Now, a week, a month...

I thought when a stout was sour it means it turned bad...

Try it in ten minutes. In those ensuing minutes, you have do the cha-cha slide circling the bottle while screaming out the names of dead celebrities. It makes it taste better.

I first had a bottle that was about 4 months old, and while good, it wasn't very sour. I then found a bottle that was a little over a year old and that one was great, much more sour. I'm not sure where the sweet spot is.

Cool, thanks. I'll probably hold on to it for a little while longer and then give it a go. Most likely within the month.

Haha. I like where your head is at. It is a bit pricey for me so we will have to see how this first one goes

Paradox brewing in woodland park co just dropped a barrell aged sour stout. You'll have to trade for it though.

Our local brewery Front Street does an awesome sour porter called Brett the Hitman Tart. Double points for the name.

Anchorage Anadromous is a pretty awesome beer. Its thick, but light, sweet and sour, its is (to me anyway) the definition of balanced in my mind. Now if like the way the beer tastes, that's another thing.
