    Hey guys,

Trying to stock up on some really good sours for my fiancé and I have a backyard rye available. I don't do much trading so I'm wondering what sours are considered equal value 1:1 or 2:1 for a Backyard Rye?

    Thanks!

If you traded oversees I bet you could get a lot of loons from cantillon or Drie fot some backyardbackyard

^^ That's true. If you want to stay domestic, you could probably land a 750 ml Cantillon Gueuze or Kriek 1:1 with Backyard Rye.

I did a 2009 Cantillon Classic 750 for Backyard a couple months ago. I hope that helps.

What about for a JK atrial rubicite? would it be 1:1? or would I have to add more?

It's really about finding the right trader. I recently traded a bunch of Crooked Stave cellar reserve beers $4$ for a few Backyard Ryes.

Earlier on in its availability, I traded a Backyard for an Atrial. The partner was extremely easy to work with. He even added to his Atrial ($15) to bring it closer to $4$. We expanded and agreed on a big trade based on that base trade in a few exchanges within 5-10 minutes. Point is, yes, it's possible and fair, but you'll have to find a fair-minded trader.

Bourbon Country isn't as big a deal over here. My local place had bottles of Vanilla and Coffee for months. I wasn't even aware Backyard was chased but am assuming it is based on some of the trades mentioned above.

Having said that none of the recent variants have seen distribution in Europe so to the right person you'd probably get some seasonal non-shelf Loons.

If you're looking for JK sours don't overpay like most everyone is these days, I've gotten Atrial several times with Black Tuesday 1:1 as well as shelf New Glarus. Backyard Rye is a difficult one to assess because it saw pretty widespread distribution in low numbers, assuming that whoever has the sour you're after also likely had access to GI/Variants this past fall might hinder some folks. However, I would think you could get some nice shelf Loons like others have said, or for AWA's you could look towards Crooked Stave or limited Russian River/Allagash stuff.

I see 1:1 using BT is overpaying considering it's $30/bottle vs. $15 for the Atrial. I'd gladly do Backyard for Atrial each time before BT. It comes down to the trading partner and what he/she has access to more easily. For me, that's Backyard, for you, BT and NG sours.

Coming from a Texan who's dealt quite a bit of atrial... if you want atrial for backyard, I'd wait until the next batch.. which is going to be a while. Atrial is not trading for BT or Backyard these days because of the drought.

    Good luck!

I guess I mean value in terms of my taste/rarity rather than $$. BT is an annually produced beer that has relatively high limits and a large audience with easy access. Backyard was a single batch, albeit huge output and huge distro footprint but not easily attainable and to me tastes way better than BT or Atrial, but I see what you mean. I am jealous that you had better access to Backyard though, that was one of the best beers I had last year.

Initially had to work all my connections in Philly and the surrounding area, even traded some BCBCS '13 coffee for some because I was able to get a bunch of coffee. 2 weeks after everything seem to have ran dry, I got a call from a distributor I'm friendly with asking if I wanted a case. I bought it and split it among 6-7 of my friends. Truth be told, it's my least favorite BC variant and I liked BT better. Definitely one of those subjective valuation when it comes to trade using either of these beers, but $4$ is secondary for sure.

If I end up with more Backyard and you have another BT to trade, maybe we can work something out. I know a friend of mine has a Backyard and would love a BT. We can expand of NG sours, etc. Cheers!

    (Sorry to derail, OP)

Haha no that's ok I always love reading people's different opinions. At the end of the day, I'm doing this for my fiance (getting married next Saturday) because sours are the only beers that she actually enjoys. I have fun drinking with her at home and if it means giving up my stouts for sours then that's something I'm trying to do so we both can enjoy especially in order to try sours we have never tried. I'm just trying to get my hands on a sour that I probably won't get out here in Cali and I've heard good things about atrial rub. Idk what's worth more between a backyard and an atrial rub but as long as I know that we will extremely enjoy the atrial rub then that's all that matters to us. Also, I've heard good things about the melange 9, have you guys had it?

Man, less than 2 weeks away...plenty of time to back out! Hahahahaha :grinning:

Haven't had Melange 9, but you're not going to pull one with a Backyard, that's for sure. It's Hoarders Society, but who knows, someone may help you out.

I heard The Wanderer is outstanding. 1:1 with a Backyard seems fair and someone local should be able to help you out.

Actually I just traded for the wanderer this past weekend. I gave up a twilight of the idols, heady, and two pipeworks ipas and in return I got a beat, consecration, supplication and the wanderer. For a melange 9, I would trade a backyard rye plus throw in something like a Prairie bomb. Only thing is haven't heard much about the melange 9 in terms of how good it is. I know it's hard to get because it's hoarders but I'm also hoping it's Really Damn good too haha.

If I didn't already have several bottle of Backyard I'd do the trade. Hell I just sent an Atrial for some basically shelf IPA at $4$ ... I must be doing it wrong. Lol

People need to stop treating beer like commodities trading. It's a consumable with limited life at that. If you trade something you have for something you want to drink more, what the hell difference does it make.

    And Atrial is $16

I respect what you preach... but this is BA, and it is the reality.. I'm just telling him what we all know to expect, but if he finds someone who's willing to do it like you, more power to him.

I think the bigger reason that he won't get Atrial for Backyard is the fact that Backyard was just released in Austin within the last few weeks.
